I'd like to poll Forumites on the distance we live from Amtrak Stations.

I'm probably 12 miles from the Atlanta Amtrak station for the Crescent. Southbound is supposed to get in at 8AM, where they take off the sleepers to New Orleans, and Northbound is supposed to leave at 8PM, after they put the sleepers back on for the trip to Washington and New York. I understand the Southbound trip from Atlanta to New Orleans in the daytime is pretty boring. However, the Northbound run up the East coast in the summer late in the day through the Carolinas is quite scenic. Sorry to say, I've never taken any one of these trips. Spent my money on Atlas boxcars.

It is 4.5 miles for me to Pennsylvania Station, New York. I have taken the ACELA out of there to Baltimore a dozen times.
I think it's the busiest Amtrak Station.
The big renovation appears to be no-go due to money issues. (As well as others.)

I'm about 5 miles from the nearest one (Deerfield Beach). Amtrak's Silver Star/Meteor run thru twice a day using CSX/Trirail trackage.

The nearest Amtrak train to me is the "Heartland Flyer" (Oklahoma City - Fort Worth TX, one RT daily over former Santa Fe trackage) 100 miles west of me, about 2 hours by car.

Other Amtrak "access", here in eastern Oklahoma, is at Dallas TX (4 hour drive southwest), Wichita KS (3 1/2 hours north), Kansas City MO (5 hours north) or St. Louis MO (6 hours east).

About 10 miles to BWI airport AMTRAK station. With the MARC it would be a nice way to get to DC, but last time I checked it was at least $12 per day to park w/o a monthly MARC ticket. So for getting to a DC METRO station for visiting DC (as opposed to commuting) it's still less expensive and time consuming to drive 35 miles to New Carrolton, park for $3 to $5, and avoid the MARC charge.

For commuting its not worth it for me since the nearest metro stop to where I work is about a 20 minute walk through a drug market/shooting gallery and walking through there after leaving work at 8PM carrying a laptop doesn't seem like a very bright thing to do. (Every few months or so, our management sends out an email telling people to be careful since there was another assault on an employee.)

My wife and I do use Amtrak for traveling to NYC rather than car or plane. Its unfortunate that trip isn't faster and that the return trip is often delayed. It was really nice when Amtrack had unreserved tickets to NYC. With the reserved only policy, it gets annoying when a meeting or traffic in NYC causes a delay. Changing reserved tickets at Penn Station due to such delays is just like going to an airport ticket counter, but it takes a lot longer. After having that happen a couple of times, we make our reservations for later trains, but that puts us in the after-rush-hour period when frequency is down a lot with a big increase in waiting time. Still beats having to get undressed for the airlines. (I always wondered what would happen if someone walked up to the security outpost dressed only in a trench coat and just dropped it onto the belt before walking through the metal detector. While it should speed things up. They'd probably either want to check inside the person's mouth or arrest them for excessive humor.)

I'm 20 mile from the current Amtrak station but plans are to build a newer bigger and better station in Downtown Charlotte in the next few year. Which will add 4 more mile to the trip but the new station will have a rental car company,Greyhound service, Commuter trains,Amtrak, and CATS light rail, buses and trolley. All under one roof.

My closest one is about 15 minutes away in Plano, IL, but I think the only trains that stop there are the local Illinois ones. The best one is in Naperville, Il which is about a half hour away. You can board any of the west coast trains there or go to downtown Chicago.

There used to be a station in downtown Louisville.

Now the closest stations are in Indianapolis and Cincinnati, at least a hundred miles. Frown

From my home in Somerville, NJ:

Newark Penn: 1 mile to NJ Transit station, 28 miles on train.
Total one way senior fare $3.75, parking $3.00, free Sat/Sun/Hol. When going on an extended trip with luggage, I stow it in a secluded location, drive home and walk back. A Taxi ride to the station would cost $5.00.

Metropark: 22 miles by car, limited Amtrak service, $6.00/day parking 7 days. Taxi at least $50.00.

Trenton: Faggedaboutit! The parking is OUTRAGEOUS!

I'm within reasonable distance to three Amtrak stops:

  • 8 miles to "Amshack" on Staples Mill Road in Richmond (on the RF&P main)
  • 8 miles to Main Street Station in downtown Richmond (formerly served the C&O and SAL)
  • 11 miles to depot in Ashland, VA (also on the RF&P main)

Hmm. I think it's about 180 miles to Omaha, or about 245 miles to Fargo. You can assume I don't see an Amtrak very often.

20 miles.

Doesn't sound bad until you look at the train schedule from Raleigh, NC. REM said it best, "you can't get there from here."
