Found an old calendar - 1942 - that had some engine photos of engines by H.K. Porter. Didn't know they made them!

Great picture, what calendar did you find this picture on? I am not only interested in the Porter loco but also by the Firestone logo. I grew up in Akron Ohio and my father worked for Firestone for 37 years.

It was an H.K Porter calendar. It actually belongs to a neighbor (Doodlebug) but I scanned some of the photos in it. Can you add anything doodlebug?

Porter made thousands of locomotives. Most were small tank locomotives for industrial switching, construction, mining or agricultural use. Porter built larger 2-6-2 and 2-8-2 tank and tender locomotives that saw use on logging roads.

The photo above notes that the locomotive is fireless. The "boiler" is actually a tank to store compressed air or steam from a stationary boiler. These locomotives were used where fumes would endanger workers, as in a mine, or where there was an explosion hazard from open flame, like a Firestone rubber plant.

The plant ruins are around 55th street in Pittsburghs Lawrenceville section. I believe they also had a plant in Blairsville Pa ( near Homer City)
