The police ruled the death as a suicide. Rumer is that he jumped off of a bridge over the tracks. It was uncertain if the man was already dead when the train hit him.

"Operation Lifesaver" has been around for over twenty-years, and it has been an effective program. I invited those folks to present their program, which included a film, to speak with my junior high students in the late 1980's. At the time, I also taught an "exploratory" class on railroads and model trains. Many of my students also rode the Southern and NS steam excursions under my sponsorship. SAFETY was always the first consideration when discussing trains and railroads! Smile
