My French cousins will be arriving next month and I understand they want a day trip to NYC. I believe I can fly into Republic airport, take a cab to the train station, and pick up a train into the city. Can someone give me a link for me to check on the schedule?
The commuter train would be the Long Island Rail Road , a subdivision of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Since I havn't been there in 25 years, I cannot remember what it is near.
Go to the MTA website and follow the links to the LIRR.
There used to be a "Republic" station in the days of Fairchild-Republic airplane building days, but that stop is long-gone. As mentioned, "Farmingdale" is probably your best bet.
The other option is to fly into Long Island-MacArthur and board at the Ronkonkoma station on te north edge of the airport.
Why Republic airport? Kennedy airport is right on the new train line to the Jamaica Queens Station.
when I went into Kennedy 10 or 15 years ago, the landing fee was $50 and departure times and additional funds were required upon departure. It was a big pain in the rear. On my approach, they wanted 150 Knots until I was over the sandbar and I had to make the first turn off. I had to slow the plane to gear speed (125 Knots) and touch down on the numbers at 70 knots. It was a handfull. Repubilic was a lot friendlier. At Kennedy, it was interesting to see me at the level of the nose wheel axel on a 747 on the taxi way. Sunday night at Memphis was also interesting. I was going to Wilson FBO and the "Big" Fed Ex jet was at the other end of taxi way waiting for me to turn right in front of him. He filled up the windscreen.
I didn't realize that you were flying a private plane. Commercial flights to Republic generally require a transfer and tend to cost more than flying direct commercial flights into LaGuardia or Kennedy. Kennedy is the better airport but is priced higher and is used more for those transferring to international flights. LaGuardia is best for domestic commercial flights but tends to have the biggest delays due to it's poor runway arrangement (2 runways crossed) and antiquated main terminal.

Winrose, you can also fly into Teterboro Airport in Northern New Jersey. there are a lot of public transit options to get you into NYC, which is just a couple miles away.
