very nice effect Ed!
I wonder if you adjust contrast you can get the plume of smoke to pop out from the background trees?

Tried that on both photos. IMO, it ruins the "old time" effect.
The idea of sepia, I thought, was to get a sort of faded look.

which you did very well...
may I assume you used PhotoShop? did you create an indexed color mode? I usually convert RGB images to grayscale here at work, but have never tried a sepiatone

The version of Photoshop I use has a filter plug-in.
I just did a straight desat, then added sepia filter to the percentage I wanted.
I heard a few years ago that Photoshop was considering adding a contrast wand, so that you could add contrast to areas of a photo.
If you wanted, in any version of Photoshop, you can take the burn tool and set it to deepen shadows, which would be about the same effect, if not enough, set the dodge tool to lighten the highlights.
I think the new edition of Photoshop Elements, 7, has a lot of good stuff in it, but you don't pay (I'm speaking for myself) for a lot of stuff the average person would not use in say, Photoshop C3.

That Reading 4-8-4 is one of my all time favorites. Looks like a brute there, doesn't she!

Love the stand pipe in the first shot. Don't see those very often. I've been busy getting kids off to school and at work. Meanwhile it has been getting darker earlier & earlier! Smile I set up for a northbound train last night, but the shot didn't turn out all that impressive. Oh well. I did happen to have another earlier train heading towards me as I drove home through Minnesota, so I found a nice spot to wait for it while the sun went down. Hmm. Maybe I still can snag a decent shot in daylight after all.

Here's a couple I played with to try and look like they were shot in the '60s.

Charlie,
2107 sure is a beautiful beast. Is that a Kaiser/Frazer across the tracks in front of the loco?

Ed,
Nice shots, the sepia work very well in your pictures.
Charlie
Nice working steam shot. Something about it can't be duplicated on an excursion engine.
Kent,
I'd say you snagged a beauty of an afternoon shot.
Chris,
I think you succeeded with your aging.

Nice grouping of pictures this week.

I had to get out of the house today. Good thing I took my camera, I stumbled across this ballast train heading for Donner summit. The DUP units are common fair but the 3 SD60M's aren't. And thinking back to when I figured WP GP40's were common fair I burned a few pixels on the DUP units

The lead unit.

This is the engine I got a cab ride on yesterday. It is on Norfolk Southern Track #2 waiting for clearance to continue through the Hazelton Yard in Campbell, OH.

I think it's a Kaiser, but I'm not sure. I doubt it's a Nash. The only Nash I could think of that look like that would be the old "Bathtub" Nash. Those were a little longer and lower (I think, it's sorta hard to tell from the distance). More definate is the fact that the bathtub Nash had basically a fender skirt in the front wheel well.

But either way, a Nash sure sounds fun on a date!!!!

Bob, they wouldn't let me sit in the Engineer's seat, but did explain what everything was. Smile

Carguy,
Some 50's Chrysler products had a shape like that too, but I'm betting Kaiser. You're right a Nash was fun on a date - a friend of mine restored one when we were in high school. Memories, memories.
