Visited Winchester Virginia last Sunday, stopped by the Winchester & Western Railroad Shop.
This is a small railroad for which almost the sole purpose is to furnish quality sand, processed at a small town named Gore Virginia, to CSX which moves it all over the east.
This locomotive sits in the "front yard" evidently unused:

I'm not very familiar with these old Alcos..what model is this engine?

It is always extra special when foreign power comes through Bethlehem Pa. Here are three shots of UP 5544 leading a container train:

That Winchester & Western unit 120 looks like it is still a slug. No room for a RR diesel under that low hood and I don't see any stacks indicating smaller diesels. So I wonder if they use it as a slug with some other mother unit or is it just a show piece. Looks like an EMD switcher cab. Looks like maybe converted from an Alco RS-11, RS-27, or RS-32 originally, but it is riding on EMD trucks probably to better mate with an EMD mother.

According to ABPR.Railfan.net and railpictures.net, Winchester and Western 120 is an MT-4. The unit is an ex-Conrail slug with the addition of a cab from an Indiana Harbor Belt SW1500.

A slug makes sense. No stacks, etc. And she has those Blombergs.. and the road's other units are EMD Geeps.
It would be interesting to know why, given the low height of 120, they would feel the need to install a cab. One thing for sure, it's very unique!

Great shots, again this week. This is my only contribution this week.

We were stopped due to a dynamiter in our train and the conductor was walking the train. I had my camera set on B&W from some other pictures taken earlier in the week so this is what I got.

Greg..darn nice shot..I think the b&W adds a little here. I hate to be positive Wink about the UP, but dang I do love the flag on the flanks and the heritage eagle wings on the front.
And it would be so nice if some other roads would paint some of their new units in heritage paint..can you imagine a Baltimore and Ohio ES44DC?

RK..what is the A frame building in your first photo?

Ed

Ed,
Thanks, from you that means a lot. I've really enjoyed your pictures. Yes I think the early B&O would certainly be attractive on an ES44DC.
