There was a minor derailment at Steamtown today which took 2317 out of service for the day. Seems a crew had done some fresh paving right up to the railhead at a yard crossing. The engine crew, apparently unaware of this, proceeded across the crossing which completely derailed the engine.

...make sure that the people you hire for paving understand the concept of flanges.

It is hard to believe that asphalt paving could derail this heavy an engine. Looks like they not only filled in the flangeways but left som on top of the rail. I would think pavement on top of the rail is the real cause. Ed

2317 had the middle set of drivers re-tired two winters ago. the tires were then turned to match the existing other two sets of drives. A lot of material was wasted. Then during the up-coming major overhaul all the tires were to be redone again. I believe that at least one of the tires replaced was damaged.

Point to be made is that the tires and flanges are well worn, which could contribute to the de-rail problems.

Where did that photo 4 come from? Looks to be 2 1/2 foot gauge. Look the the man's foot compared to the track gauge.

Optical illusion.

The engine is sitting on the switch frog, the points are behind us.

Numbering the rails left to right as 1-4: Rails 1-3 belong to one "track" and 2-4 belong to the "other".

Copish? Smile
