Great News! I have just heard thru the "grapevine" that CP will be restoring this magnificent machine back to operating status, hopefully running for next summer.
It has spent numerous decades on display at Ipsco Park in Regina Saskatchewan. It was purchased by Ipsco from the CPR after it was retired. Apparently some of the UP Steam guys are coming up to take a look at her. 3101 will be towed to Calgary's Ogden Shops, where the overhaul will take place.

Interesting! The "CP Steam Guys" are currently enroute to British Columbia with their Hudson #2816! I can't wait to hear Bill Stetler's take on this "rumor" (Bill is the Manager of the CP steam program).

Yes, that was the source of the info so I was told. I would love to have a chance to work on it. Years ago while living in Toronto, I had the chance to work on CPR 1201 when it was getting re-built at the John Street Roundhouse. Also worked on maintaining CN's 6213 Northern that was on display there. Al

Steamwise, CP seems to be developing into another Union Pacific!

Forget it! Bill Stetler has enough to do with the 2816. Also, please do NOT listen to any of the other CP steam crew members. Unless you hear something from Bill himself, it is bogus!

Hot Water is correct. Bill will have his hands full with other responsibilities rather than start on another project. This is a full blown rumor.

Because UP has had a long established "Heritage Program" for more than 40 years! The Challenger was "folded" into the steam team's responsibility back in 1981. The Canadian Pacific is still relativly new at this whole "steam thing" and as a result, have a VERY small work force and a "small work area" under the steam team's control. UP has the multi-million dollar Cheyenne Steam shop and remaining roundhouse for equipment storage.

Hot Water:

I thought:

1. The steamers, 6936, E-units, passenger cars, and other like items were part of the "hostoric/al collection"

2. The "Magnificent Six" SD70Ace's (MP, WP, KATY, et. al.) were the "heritage collection."

Or do I have my terms wrong?

Dominic,

Long befor there were SD70ACe units, the Union Pacific Heritage consisted of two "divisions":

A) The Heritage passenger fleet, now based at the Council Bluffs, IA shop (previously at the Omaha Car Shops.

B) The Heritage Locomotive fleet, based at Cheyenne, which ORIGINALLY was 844, 3985, 6936, the three E units, and the shop switcher. The snow plows are also maintained and operated by the Steam Team as needed.

When UP Corporate Headquarters made the decision to start painting newly delivered EMD SD70ACe units in colors which represented those railroads merged into the UP, they also became "Heritage" units (NOT maintained by Cheyenne, however).
