I have heard rumors that CSX has four or five of it's GE AC6000CW's re-engined with a new 16 cylinder diesel of GE's own design. I know for a fact there is at least one 6000 brought up to Gevo specs as far as the electronics. The fella I know who worked on this locomotive did not know if it had the new diesel. It would be neat to know exactly how many and what numbers these CSX units are if this is so.
I also have heard China has ordered a GE locomotive with this new big 16 cylinder diesel. There have been arguments that a 6000 hp locomotive is not needed anymore, but with the info I've learned here on this forum, it seems that this loco would be great on long runs at high speed, with fuel savings. It has more horsepower but weighs less, which seems to fit well with fuel savings at speed. I would think it will be sometime before something replaces 4000hp AC locomotives in heavy haul service. I know from some of the fellows my Dad worked with, and now my brother since he hired on CSX as a machinist, that the 6,000 hp German style motors are being replaced with 16 cyl. motors in the Huntington,Wva shop.
I'll ask my brother if he has heard with what type of engine. Collin "The Eastern Kentucky & Ohio R.R." |

Ed,
What have you heard about CSX SD70's not MUing with RR's unit very nicely? For some reason when they are a trailing unit and after being shut down and manually restarted, they screw up the brake set up on the lead unit. |

Son Doug might know something about that, he works at Cumberland Shop. I should see him this week, I'll ask.
