On the same site, are links to two other types of frightening-looking steamers:

The Quadraplex, which was apparently actually on the drawing boards until the Triplex proved a failure, and...

The Hexaplex, a complete fantasy that would frighten children and small pets, even in model form.

And I'll bet somebody would like to have models of these, even if just for giggles Smile

OK I buy into that the Holman was probably a hoax to swindle. But just what if the idea was to spread the engine weight from one wheel to two thus a more powerful and heavier engine could traverse lighter (branch) rails of that time. Granted there would be the wheel slip problem especially on grades. And maybe other unanticipated problems.

But ya know, unless something is tried, you may not know if an idea while good on paper, was practically feasible. What if the Wright brothers thought curving wings wouldn't provide lift or if warping wings wouldn't make the plane turn??? Unless it's tried....

Just a thought.

One obvious problem seems to have been missed. The locomotive has been elevated - but not the tender! I really feel sorry for the fireman!
