Great news. It was sad to see the 4872 scrapped not too long ago after being preserved by NJT. It was the only remaining one of the three painted in the silver and red scheme. Always a good day when a G gets to live on and the Henry Ford museum is an excellent one for preservation.

Great pictures! But wow, even a cosmetic restoration will take a lot of work. I may buy stock in Bondo. She need some serious body and fender work.

CSX Fan- Fantastic photos, first time every seeing the inside guts of a GG1. Would anyone possibly have any links with some GG1 footage with sound. Ive always wanted to hear one of these bad boys moving, I would imagine that they had a very distinct sound. John

My memory of seeing the G in action was the roaring sound of something like the F40PH minus the prime mover sounds. They were not quiet and Lionel has actually done a pretty faithful reproduction in the JLC. My first memory was a 6 year old on the platform in Newark with one "whoosing" by like a jet engine. Of course I have not ridden behind one since October 22, 1983. It's been a few years.

During my commuting days to NYP during the early 80's, I would always make sure to ride in the first car on my morning train. Before the conversion of New York consists to Comet 2 equipment, most coaches featured vestibules with "Dutch" doors. On nice days I would situate myself in the vestibule and listen to the traction motors of the G's as they wound up accelerating from UNION eastward toward New York.
To this day those sounds remain very fresh in mind. In hindsight, I probably should have made some recordings.
