While having residential structures is important for a layout, I have found industrial buildings really make a "train" scene come alive and compliment the trains. If you've ever stood in an area dominated by heavy industry with railraod tracks running through, you know what I mean. I am kind of disappointed in the selection available in O - I have some of the more interesting models from MTH, Korber IHC, and others. HO scale seems to have unlimited choice of interesting industrial building kits. If you know of any other sources, or have pictures of your industrial scenes, no matter how large or small the structure(s), please post, I need ideas for hard to design for areas. Here are some pictures of my kit-bashed engine house which can also serve as a factory by switching and docking freight cars in.

Another interesting structure, the MTH Brewery, is a good one, of course it needs to be weathered:

No way! A two-story stacked engine house, with an integrated bridge for the second level!

That is very cool!

John, my motivation for building the two-story engine house was that I didn't want to have to disassemble my ABA unit tethers. I've since sold all my ABA diesels!

Vulcan, while my harbor is relatively small, I had grand plans to build a much larger one. Alas, reality is what it is. Ships and trains are great, aren't they?

Nice looking buildings, Jim. I especially like the 3-d relief.

Gizzmo: That is the Lionel tugboat.

BTW: I don't have a lot of space left on the layout, so I am looking for any ideas, even for small areas.

Paul, some O gauge posters are using HO buildings and fronts and details for backgrounds. You can use the overhang idea with that.

What about making it a car maintainance building? Push a few passenger cars in on the upper level, some freight cars on the lower level. You could add welding lights, etc.

That bridge looks great!

Here is a combo freight transfer station and engine repair facility and forklift barrel drop off. All items were weathered and two of the three are animated with remote buttons:

I hesitate to post these but I will only to show how I have often shamelessly tried to imitate the work of Jim P, Norn C, Vulcan, John and others that post on the scenery forum including your work. I seldom have original ideas on buildings but really enjoy the creative ideas I see here. Neat idea on the elevated track entering building.

Pennsynut: Very neat looking structures - the long building with loading docks looks fun to switch cars on.

Pnut, no problem with that at all. That's one of the great assets of the forum and the internet, with have the resources to see what may have gone relatively unseen.
I often try to replicate, or at least use aspects of, the great work I see.

And in my case, right down to Jim's hairline. But if I had my choice......
