Doug,

One way would be to use plain old window screen material from the hardware store and straight pins from a sewing store.

Cut the screen on a bias (angle) and stick the pins into the layout to resemble fence posts. Vary it however you want from there.

Hi Doug
I have found that the old metal window screening worked best for me as it stayed straight without flexing like the new ones do.
The other trick I found was to place a peice of masking tape the same height as what you want for the fence, placing it on a 45 degree angle on the screen to use as a guide for cutting.
I kept the tape on it until the fence was bent and cut to fit wherever it will go.
These pics tell the story

I was lucky and found a person who had a pile of these old screens and said "take as many as you want" they were glad to get rid of them.
Look around and I'm sure you will find some.
Dennis also has a great looking product.

Paul,

Being from South Carolina I am surprised that you do not have window screen material. Maybe it is not in the big box stores but a hardware store should have it. Also shops that do storm windows, replacement windows or screen doors should have it. The last time I got some it was from a local hardware store and I had my choice of fiberglass or aluminum.

I made my first attempt at chain link fence last week.

I think the fence came out pretty good. It looks like a beat up fence as I tore up the screen quite a bit while I was trying different ways to attach the screen to the poles. Also, the poles are not properly secured into the ground so they are rather unven.

I used aluminum window screen cut at an angle for the fence fabric.

1/16" aluminum pipe for the posts and top rails.

I made end and corner posts a little longer and put a 2.5mm?? bead on top with a sequin pin through that. I used 1" eye pins though the cross bars to attach them to the end and corner posts. I used the same eye pins on top of the regular posts to run the top rails through. I used slightly bored out 4mm beads as fittings to connect the several pieces of top rail needed for the longer runs between end and corner posts. I used 28 gauge wire to tie the screen to the posts. I put some rolls of barbed wire on top to see how that looked. Ok, I think, but I put my fence too close to the tracks and the barbed wire gets hit by passing trains.

If I has seen DennisB's post before I started I think I would buy his stuff, though. Wow!

Thanks for the reply. We have window screen material, but it is not woven like the product Ray used. If you cut it, it tends to unravel. I have looked at several places locally with no luck. I will keep trying. By the way, Dennis has good stuff. I was really interested in trying to find the stuff locally.
Thanks again for the info.

I've used wedding veil material. I'm on dialup at home and don't feel like spending 15 minutes right now trying to get pix to an album and then here, but I'll post tomorrow.

I did paint it with silver paint though.

I think G&G Hobby Shop here in Houston has some material which could be used with chain link fence. They have a lot of scale modeling stuff for building for Rice U engineering class.
