OK Vulcan, you asked to see it
This project was done over a year ago but I had taken pictures as I went along

This shows how I started with a frame and foam core as backing for the siding.
I had used white foam core which I wouldn't recommend, the black is much better.

The siding which is wood veneer on this one (plastic siding can also be used)has the cut outs for the windows and doors.
The porch foundation is started and the floor cut to size for it.

Trim, doors and windows installed.

The porch was constructed as a seperate assembly to make it easier to work on.
I like to use this approach for most things I build.
You can see a small wire latch above the top windows that when turned holds the porch assembly on.

Porch completed and installed.

Painted, weathered and details added

Lights and interior details installed

Looks like it fits right in.

Absolutely beautiful work!

The wood veneer.....did you scribe the "siding" look into it?

If you've got 'em, smoke 'em! (Trains, that is)

Ray, a great tutorial, Thanks. What "bricks" did you use for the foundation? Individual , embossed, or? Thanks, Dave

Ray, I was afraid my hints were too subtle. Wink.

Do you scratch the stairway? What about the windows and doors?

I guess I have a soft spot for old woodframe tenements. And yours is no exception.

Thanks

catch-22, the siding is as it comes, this one was from
http://www.mtalbert.com/lumber/products2.html it's a good quality siding, nice and thin and easy to work with.

Dave, the bricks believe it or not are ptinted out fro Model Builders Software

Vulcan, the stairs are from Grandt and you will need a little patience putting all the pieces together while keeping it straight.
I taped the stringers to a section of rectangular basswood leaving the areas for the treads sticking out so I could start it and when enough treads were glued on they held it together after removing it from the wood so I could finish the rest of the treads.
For windows I used either Tichy or Grandt.

And for the trim I use Plastruct styrene strips or sometimes basswood.

Wow! I would have guessed everything but "printed" brick on the footings. Even the closeup doesn't reveal it.

I may have to re-think my thinking on printed details.

And let's don't talk about snakes!

Thanks for posting the sequence again, Ray!

I liked it the 1st time and I like it just as much now - I need to adapt these techniques to an area of my own layout it the near future (read: this decade, Big Grin That's about as fast as I can move...).

Vulcan, if used for the right scene or area print outs can work great
Here is one I am working on, you could see a portion of the wall which really bothered me. I had 3 choices, cut the wall and put a real tunnel in, install a mirror or print out something that would blend in. so I found a scene that I thought would look good there and brought it into MBS. I didn't like the sides, only the tunnel area so added blocks on both sides. Now I can live with that.

Model Builder is the program I'm using
I was one of the 1st to get it when it came out many moons ago and gave Him a list of what I thought should be changed, added etc and he has pretty much done all that and more.
After your initial purchase price all the updates will be free.

Also there are more images for everyone's use...we are over 500 textures now! And last but not least, new "paper tools" to help cut roof angles and such. Read about the update here..
