I like to use 1:43 autos/trucks with my predominantly scale sized trains and really appreciate the finer die cast models but it can be a bit pricey. I did spring for a couple of very nice 1:50 REA tractor-trailers from Die Cast Direct and would like to find a reasonably priced forklift (not smaller than 1:50 or larger than 1:43).

I've also been looking for a reasonably priced (<$20) 50's era Checker cab for a while now. Die Cast Direct has one near $100. Someone suggested Rite-Aid, but their die cast was mostly modern era. I've seen Checker cabs at some shows, but they wouldn't look right with the more detailed die cast [even though my stuff far from "high end" Razz ].

Any suggestions for either? Thanks,
Stack

Stack what you can get is the Solido 1950 Chevy taxi or Vitesse Chrysler and De Soto. A few months ago I sold the Solidos on this forums buy/sell.

I think that I picked up a couple of Road Champ "Checkers" a year or so ago. They are boxed with all the other scenery so I can't say for sure.

Use caution when buying new taxies at train shows. Many of the ones with the sign on top are even larger than 1:43. This is true of the other cars ('53 Ford, '53 Cadillac, '57 Chevy) that dealer may be selling.
I agree that the Solido '50 Chevy and '47 Chrysler cabs look great. These retailed for $15. in the '80s, and can be found at shows or on eBay for as little as $10.
The IXO Checker cab is the most detailed, but they may run you $25.+.

I bought the kind of checker cab you are looking for at rite aid. I believe it was less than 5 dollars.

Ertl 1/43 scale taxi cabs are on ebay every day.
Also you can find 2 of them on the MTH Transportation flat car offering.

As for fork lifts, there are only 3 others made other than the goofy Woodlandscenics 1/50 scale set.
Try - (9NZG Hyster Fork Lift #410 Germany O Scale O S50XM)

Just another (properly modeled) item needed for O scale.

Stack, I like the Solido 1950 Chevy taxi and the 50's era Ertl Checker Cab. Bought both from a forum menber in the buy/ sell/ wanted section and bougt a couple more of the same on Ebay, along with a Vitesse 1953 Chrysler cab.

You mentioned above that Diecast Direct has a 50's era Checker cab. The item you mention must be a Brooklin....very nice quality, very heavy, and very expensive too. The other cabs noted here are all realistic items with good quality for the price. I paid ballpark $6 for the Ertl, $20 for the Vitesse, and $12 for the Solido. They all look great on the layout, especially with a 1/43 Presier figure beside them.

Paul the Brooklin Checker cab is a 49 and the Vitesse cab is a 47.
Stack has to do more ebay searching and watch this forums buy/sell board.

A lot of good leads here and thanks everyone for your responses! I am a frequent purchaser from our B/S/W forum, but seem to always end up only buying engines Big Grin! There always seems to be at least one irresistible offer of exactly what I wasn't looking for Big Grin!

Thanks Again,
Stack

I picked this up a few years back for around $20.00. It's made by a company called IXO.

It fits in very nicely with the vehicles on my layout.
The yalso make a Ford Crown Vic version...

There is an IXO Checker on the Bayfor $11.99 BIN; but it is a 1980.

There is also a lot of 10 Ertl 1959 Checkers on the Bay for $75. If you don't need ten I'll take a few.

Bob

Stopped at a Rite Aid. The ones on the rack were made by Kinsmart (?) and were 1/40.

I found a checker a couple years ago in a Manhatten hotel gift shop. They also had the Ford taxi. I would think that in New York that this might be an easy find.
