I met someone very special at this pavilion so I just had to make a model.
For those of you familiar with North Park, in the burgh, this pavilion is near the intersection by the lake where there's the canon and the flower garden. It's the 2nd pavilion in, GRANT GROVE. I took exact measurements and made this thing as close as possible to scale, including the underside of the roof and the electronics (Grant Grove is one of the few that have electric service). The height of the roof was a guess but it's close. I plan on modeling the playground equipment too, beyond just the one that I've done so far. The picnic tables are scaled to the ones there too. The body is all wood mounted on blue board. The roof exterior is Plastruc. I really didn't use any special techniques or products - the bane of many scratchbuilding articles that I read with interest. These are all readily available items. The goal: As I normally do, I make the structure out of cardstock first to get a feel for how things mate: I always draw it to scale first. In this case I needed the drawing to help align the posts and such: I went overboard on making the railings precise, but the results made it worth it: This shows how I made the round male railing parts. I inserted the square wood piece into a drill and rotated the wood piece with a wood file in place to shape it: This is the completed body: another example of my high tech tools! The interior of the roof (inverted, obviouslY) The real interior. I didn't want to model the 'mess' though: Another shot of the interior of the model's roof: The nameplate for the Grove: My attempt: An important picnic structure This is a really crappy picture, sorry. But it's right on, including the signs. THE favorite of my kids: My version. The railings are solder wire. Easy to shape and the right size: The finished model: - walt |

It's great making models of things that have meaning for you. It turns it into a labor of love. Very nice work Walt - thanks for sharing.

You know what? It took me a long time to convince myself to post pictures of things that I've made here on the scenery forum. The main reason was because of the great work that you guys do. Amazing stuff. Your work is out of this world.
But a friend at work told me I should so I am. Humbly, and comparatively so to be honest, I will post a few here and there. I have several more houses to post, a board-by-board barn, and some other things. Scratchbuilding is by far my favorite train modeling interest. You guys, sharing tips and techniques, help a lot. It's easy to look at a model and give it the WOW factor. But, here on this forum, where techiques are shared, that's THE TICKET!!!! That said, I'm enjoying the models that I've made. Each and every one bring back special moments, like this pavilion. No special techniques or products, just an inspiration. - walt |

Walt, it would be a crime not to share the things you've scratched. I, for one, am very impressed. And look forward to seeing more.

Nice work all around there, Walt!
Really like your mock-up method with the cardstock; that really sets everything into place and helps to avoid a lot of problems later in a project. Questions are a burden to others, answers a prison for oneself |

Nothing to be ashamed of Walt, you do very nice work. I think you nailed the pavilion and that thing that goes around. I really like the porta-pot. The picnic tables are really nice and neat.
