My wife has recently started using insulin and I have to give her the shots.

Anyway, I noticed that the plunger end caps look like they could be used for O gauge scenery.

Has anyone with diabetes on the forum used these caps for garbage cans, or cut them down for roof ventilators on commercial buildings?

Mike,
Sorry to hear that your wife is needing to start to taking insulin shots. Nobody likes getting shots. Frown

We've come up with a few uses of syringe parts that you didn't list.

Leslie made the top part of this planter with the hub of a needle cover. The bottom part was made with sculpey clay. She needs to replant some of the flowers that fell out.

I used the plunger of a syringe to make the wheels for this conveyor belt.

Those are neat ideas!

After spending some time on this forum, you start to see O gauge scenery in a lot of different items. We might as well recycle as much of the syringes as possible. After all, they're not free.

I'm diabetic too, but so far I've been spared the shots.

Wow, I have been using Insulin for many years and have often thought that there must be a way to use some of those caps. I use at least 5 needles a day so that means a LOT of plastic caps. The other thing I have wondered about is the protective cap that covers the needle itself. Any ideas?

I hope this thread realty takes off! If anyone needs a few of these caps, send me an email and I can mail a few to you.

I was fortunate to be on insulin a very short time. But in that time, I have used the caps for garbage cans, the plungers for sign posts, and the testing tab dispenser for the cylinders. I have not made anything with the lancets but the the part that breaks off looks like the safety light on a construction saw horse.

Here is how I made Fire Hydrants. In the Picture below you can see left to right, 1) insulin syringe tip, 2) end of tip cut off, 3) Stopper of a Sterile needleless syringe used when a diluent is added to a dry medicine, 4) tip of syringe super glued to the stopper and 5)Two pieces of small hobby shop round plastic, glued to the stopper and painted.

Now those are cool! If anyone has a few of those stoppers from the needleless syringes that they could provide me with I sure would appreciate it! Could even trade you the needle caps and a few of the other caps so that you could make a few trash cans!

Thanks and again, great idea! Good Thread

Mellotronko,
Great job on the fire hydrant.

This desk lamp is made from a needle and cap. It's a pretty bad picture, and probably not a very good use of a needle but:

My wife suggested that we can paint them and then place in the bed of pickup t trucks or one can paint the and put some small decals on them (Dow Corning) and set them on loading docks. Represents 55 Gal drums of chemicals.

Two relared things. Insulin (and some vialed liquid meds) that I use in my practice come with two basic popoff lids. I the picture below the middle row show the shallow lip lids( found on Lantus Insulin vials) which are perfect for manhole covers. The bottom row are painted lids. On the right of the upper row shows the other type of lid (found on NPH, Regular & 70/30 Insulins). I have not found a use for these orange lids but time will help. Also on the upper row shows Desicant containers found in certain meds. The lid pops off and you can pour out the desicant materials.

Never even thought about using the lids off the insulin. I Love the man hole cover idea. Amazing what modelers can find to use for garbage! I still would like to find a few of those needle less syringe plungers for the fire hydrants in anyone can help.

Thanks and lets keep this going. Great ideas so far and I am planning on using both the man hole cover idea along with the fire hydrants.

I've used the needles to paint lettering on p/u trucks and to do detail painting on building. By dipping the needle tip into our paint you can get a very line line or dot of paint.
BTW never thought of a use for the caps till I read this thread now you got my brain thinking of a use for them Thanks
