I just tried ordering some sidewalks from Scenic Express today and they say that they no longer make them. These were really neat items, they were scribed and had drainage access, and etc.

Just wonder what you all do to make your own sidewalks or is there another supplier that you use?

Hey Guys,

The product Andre referrs to above is backer board.

Backer Board

They sell it in my store and most Home Depots.

Railroad-guy, the product you refer to is cement uderlayment and heavy and dusty to work with and you can't really get a clean edge due to the fiberglass mesh covering.

Try heavy poster paper cut to what ever size/profile you need. Score it, paint it your favorite shade of gray and glue it down. Don't forget a few cracks. Big Grin

1/8" masonite with scribed expansion joints and cracks:

Or travertine tile from the home center for a more rugged, weathered look:

Unfortunately, not at the HD's in my area.
The Masonite sure looks promising, though. Thanks!

The concrete board shown above is actually something called wonder board. It comes in sheets of various thickness. The 1/4 inch is used for streets, highways etc here.

the Hardie backer board already has sidewalks scribed into it. Its different material then the wonder board and comes in 1/8 inch. Got a sheet in $1 bin at lowes. Will use this for sidewalks. Also have used 1/8 inch MDF that was scribed and wiped with a black wash.

Any construction supply house would carry something similar

Holy concrete Batman! There's some nice sidewalks shown here.

I have so far just been using a layer of matteboard on top of 1/4" MDF. I spray paint the matteboard a dark gray color, and it kinda-sorta simulates slate:

I use Midwest Cork (0 scale), paint it Woodland Scenics Concrete and add lines and cracks with a fine point black pen.

Here is work in progress. Hardee backer board (John Devlin has link above) is over the concrete board (its wonder board here) that AG used.

what is nice about this is that the backer board simply has 5 drywall screws (one under each building). Despite the screws being so far from edge, the curb lies flat on concrete board.

Here are a few pictures of one of my modules. The sidewalks are cut, then carved from 1/8” thick MDF board, and the street is carved right into the module’s plywood top. This quite easy to do and looks real convincing.

Just finished reading in DennisB's book that he uses plain old yardsticks. They are just over 1" wide and 1/8" thick. Scales out perfect for a 4' sidewalk. Once painted and scribed they seem ideal.

I use 1/8" thick artists illustration board and slice it to a scale 4 or 5' wide section (1"- 1 1/4" wide). Then I paint it with a sidewalk shade of gray, weather it a bit and nail it down to the table with small brads. Cheap way to go and it looks excellent.

I use MDF board. You can buy 2x4' pieces called handy panel at Home Depot. I usually use 1/4" for around the buildings for the sidewalks and then put down 1/8" in front of that for the road surface. MDF is nice because you can make cracks and chips easily with an old X-Acto blade. I save all my old blades for this reuse.

No offense but the backer board sure looks too tall.

Personally I just use cardboard painted concrete color and dirtied up w/ whatever is handy.

The cardboard needs to be built up usually three ply looks right.
Not high tech stuff but cheap.

Wherever I can find it. Unfortunately they don't pack new shirts in it any more.

Don't forget to scribe it and of course add cracks.

I use a similar approach. I use 1/4" cork sheets and then place it next to 1/6" streets. It looks pretty good to me.
