I was reluctant to post a topic here yet about this, only because I wanted to run a pilot period first in order to shake things out and ensure the software is working Ok. That's been done, and things look to be running smoothly.

I've started a new feature on my site, called the All-Star Photos. Since we really would like to have a more permanent place for some of our best pics to stay for posterity, I thought this might be a fun way to do just that.

Each month, a new category will open up in the "Polls" section, named for the next month. Photos can be submitted, in the form of new topics, in that category. There is a deadline which is the end of the current month, and after that, the category is frozen.

Then, there is a period of one month after that for everyone to vote on that poll's photos. At the deadline, the votes are tallied up, and the winner is automatically copied over to the "All-Star Photo Gallery" category (in the "General Topics" section), where it stays forever.

I would like to invite and encourage everyone to register and participate - even if only to vote on the photos. The more participation, the better.

bfishma - no worries, there's ample time to contribute more photos, as the deadline is Sept. 30.

To participate, simply register as a user there: http://www.jcstudiosinc.com/BlogRegisterDisplay

It will then email you a password, and then you can login and add threads, post replies, just like any forum. Also, you'll be able to vote on the 4 photos that are there now.

Check out the All-Star Primer thread in the All-Star Photo Gallery for a quick rundown on how we aim to make it work.

Even if you just participate by voting on the existing photos, it will be helpful. I'd also like to hear feedback from people, as this helps to make the site easier to use, intuitive, etc.

thanks john. i will do that, hopefully sometime this weekend. are participants limited to one photo per month?

I know I registered; just have to locate what I did / put ethe info...

There is currently no limit on the number of submissions per month - we'll see how it goes for a few months.

I want to also make sure no one feels like they "lost" just because their photo didn't win one of the polls. If it were me, I'd keep re-submitting my photos each month until one of them wins.

Oh, I have it in my office - printed it out and then..........

Just have 3 manuscripts on my desk and a dissertation chapter some a lonely single page is a little hard to locate right now.

After I file a few reviews, return a few revisions, crush the hopes & dreams of a few researchers, and torment my grad student, I'm pretty sure that after a few cold ones I'll be able to locate it,

This is probably as good a time as any to mention that images work slightly different on my site. Looks like a few people are having a little trouble getting the photos to show up in their posts. So here's a blurb I just posted on the All-Star Primer thread in the All-Star Photo Gallery category

Seems like a quick tutorial is in order for how to post photos here. It works slightly different on my site.

To get a photo to appear in your post, click on the little image icon, and a text box should appear labeled "image URL:". (On some browsers, this text box appears automatically, without having to click on the image icon).

In the text box, you want to paste in the actual URL of your image. It doesn't need

 [IMG]...[/IMG] 

tags wrapped around it.

Alternatively, you can also just enter the

 <img src='...'> 

tag right into the text of your message. Your image URL would go in between the quotes (i.e., replace the ... with your image URL).

(Clear as mud, huh?)
