Hi Guys and Gals...
Some of you saw my posts on the regular 3-rail forum and asked that I post over here...I don't know why I didn't think of it myself but perhaps I should have posted here in the first place since from what I can tell, you guys will be able to use my stuff as an example of what not to do!!! GHEZZ....I feel like I am in the middle of a bunch of fine artists so I will be very open to suggestions of how I can improve what I am doing. Anyway, I will post the last three pictures of the latest building complex (twin towers sort of) for my new urban themed layout. So you know, while I have scratch built from the ground up structures for my layout, the structures you see here in this post were constructed from 8 to 10 old girder and panel sets from the 1970s. One has to come up with a design and then build from that point...doesn't take a lot of skill but does make an impressive structure. Anyway, for those of you that don't want to make everything from scratch and just want to get a feel of a somewhat complex kit, these sets are the way to go. When introduced, they were scaled at HO but one can see that window sizes, even in prototypical structures, will vary from architectural style to style so the size of the structure fits in fine with the O-scale taxi you see next to the building. Hope you enjoy the pictures.... Thanks, Alan |

Leavingtracks-Are the panel/Girder sets your are using the Kenner Play sets of the 60's-70's or another brand that I don't remember, I used the Kenner play sets and still have them for future use, my problem was always cannabalizing sets to get clean unbroken windowpanels not ripped etc.( because kids did play with them). My Goal in the future is to use the girders to develop a skyscraper under construction and add all kind of workers and construction animations to make the scene come alive. Years ago John Allen on his HO Gore and Daphetid had a building in his skyline under construction in his city of Port and that always caught my eye and I have done and will do again when other projects are done in the cities on my Bellevue and Schenectady RR. Hi Don...I believe you asked this same question on the 3 rail thread and both myself and Marty answered so I hope it was helpful. Just in case you didn't check that out, take a look here: www.girderpanel.com and you will find that in fact the answer to your question is YES!!!
Thanks for looking, Alan |

Im looking on the site and it seams that all the sets have bright red girders. Did you paint yours before construction? |
||||
|
Stevin...no I don't paint them. Over the years many different colors of girders were produced. As you click on the tab that gives a complete lising of sets, you will find the sets that have black girders. The silver ones look great too!!

WOW! Those buildings look great!
Do you have any plans for the interiors? It's going to take thousands of people to fill them Rand Give me fuel. Give me fire. Give me that which I desire! |

They are beautiful buildings!! I loved my set when I was a kid.
But.... They could use some floors to block the view. Mark |

If floors, wires, and LED lighting were added, could the stucture endure the weight?

Andrew....the answer is yes. I have done just that to several that I have built. The easiest way to add floors is to use black (or the color of your choice) construction paper cut to the size of the floor laying it on top as you build upward. I chose not to do so in this case because of the dark panels and the fact that there will be many large structures and tall buildings surrounding these that will distract the eye from "counting" floors.
