If you're headed to York, please stop by the Kalmbach booth. I'll be doing a book signing from 1 - 2 PM on Thursday and from 10 - 11 AM on Friday. This is my new book and I'm really excited to see it finally come together.

If you don't do York, you can order the book through me and still get a signed copy.

Dennis Brennan

Thanks, guys.

It's 96 pages and has over 200 photos

Here's more info from the back cover:

Realistic modeling, or hi-railing, takes a toy train layout to a new level. And with this practical guide it is easy to get started. You can try one or two projects or jump in with both feet and create an entire layout. Dennis Brennan takes you step-by-step through the construction of his hi-rail layout the Sandy Harbor Terminal Railway, using clear, informal instructions and highly detailed photos. More than a how-to guide, the book explains the concepts behind hi-rail, and Dennis also provides his insights into the modeling process.

With Realistic Modeling for Toy Trains, you’ll be able to:
• Plan an interesting and fun hi-rail model railroad
• Incorporate toy train accessories into realistic settings
• Model with common materials such as yardsticks and masking tape
• Build a variety of kits and kitbash original structures
• Use HO buildings to create a cityscape
• Ballast track and weather rails
• Create a harbor with a rocky shoreline
• Add bridges, streets and scenery

Dennis,

Just wanted to let you know that I ordered my copy from the Kalmbach site after seeing your note here, and it arrived today. Great stuff!! I am at the early stages of a project, and a newbie, so perhaps the great work you've done here will get me from planning to doing!

Do you have copies available? Kalmbach claims they won't have any to ship until Oct. 31 and amazon.com is 2-4 weeks to ship. If you do, how can we order directly from you?

Like others above, I bought mine at my LHS on Saturday. They had just received about 2 dozen copies. I was very happy to see all of the additional content and new photos. I jumped straight to Chapter 6 as I am currently trying to plan out a city/town-scape. I've enjoyed all of the tips and sidebars in the book.

Dennis,

First of all it was great talking to you on the phone and yes the signed book arrived in super fast time.

I blitzed through it and found it to be fantastic. I'm now doing a detailed reading and have trouble putting it down. You have a lot of great tips that I've never thought of or read before. Although I'm still building my benchwork, your book has allowed me to do some advance planning for the scenery which when coupled with the photo's really makes it easy to understand.

Congratulations again. I bet you're going to run out of copies at York! Awesome read and tutorial!!!

I received a copy of Dennis' book today, and besides being a help to so many of us on the Forum with answers and suggestions to our questions over the years, he has provided an excellent book that anyone that is looking to upgrade their skills in modeling in this hobby should purchase. In just scanning through it's pages between visits to the doctors today I saw many techniques, suggestions, instructions and ideas that will be of very good use to me. This book is a must have, and I look forward to going through it's pages over and over again.

I also want to take this time to thank Dennis for sending me a copy of his book to help pass the time and keep my focus during my recovery time. As busy as he had to be preparing for York and promoting his book he emailed me out of the blue for my address and sent me a signed copy along with a personal note of encouragement. Thank you Dennis for your help in the past with questions I had and for thinking of me and sending this excellent book. God Bless.

Recovery is starting to go a little better Vulcan, thanks for asking. Had a few setbacks and complications but they are getting under control. The pain from the surgery is what I knew it would be and I can deal with that no problem, but I am still running a fever that they haven't located what is causing it and it hasn't responded to any of the antibiotics they have tried so far. But all in all I think in a few more days or so I might be able to get down to my work shop and get some work started.

Dennis,
It was great getting to meet you at York and being able to talk with you about the book. Like I said then, the book is great and should be of interest to anyone building a layout.

Guys, it doesn't matter what your experience level is. Everyone will find something of value in this book. I've got my list of things to try out, and I've only gone through the book a few times so far. It's a "must have" for every train library that belongs right next to your copies of Dave Frary's scenery book and Linn Westcott's on benchwork IMO. Smile

Dennis, great book, I just got my copy today. One question, I know you did a series of articles about your layout, is there anything in those articles that I wouldn't find in the book? I was thinking about buying those past issues.

Thanks,
John.

I purchased a copy of this book at York and it got soaked walking between the buildings that afternoon. I told Dennis about it and low and behold he got the publisher to replace it. I owe him a special word of thanks for this.
As for the book itself, I just started reading it this week and its already provided a few tips that I can use on my layout.
Dennis has a great eye for depth, size, proportion, realism and weathering. He has taken many standard structures (some rather uninspiring) and has kit bashed them into some really realistic looking pieces. His layout was well planned, well thought out and well built. It is certainly a premier layout in todays times.

I got to York late this year. It was a little after 11am. I thought the book signing was over but when I past the Kalmbach booth I decided it couldn't hurt to ask if I could buy Dennis' book and get an autograph. They said the books were sold out but Dennis was still there and there was a dealer right around the corner that might still have some left. So I went around the corner and purchased the book from the dealer. This worked out good because the dealer gave me a bag with the book so I didn't have any problems of it getting wet walking between buildings. Then I went back to the Kalmbach booth and got to meet Dennis and he signed the book. I'm glad I got to meet Dennis because he is a real nice guy with a wealth of knowledge and a willingness to share it with anyone. I didn't read it yet but I have quickly looked it over and I saw several great ideas that will help me with my scenery. For anyone going for that "3RS" look I think this book is a must have.
