Okay Folks, I often see some terrific MTH 3 rail models. I'd be a buyer except I'm not sure what's involved in the conversion to 2 rail which is what I model. Can one of you chime in with a reasonable explaination of all what's involved. I'd sure appreciate it.

Thank You

Bob

Did you read Engenear-Joes posting below, "MTH 2-rail trucks". Just go to that thread, and your question might be answered.

If it is a newer car, all you may need to do is add MTH's 2-rail trucks and some Kadee couplers. But if it is an older run car, you may have to make some changes here and there.

A word of caution to just changing wheel sets. Some of the typical 3-rail cars, MTH included, sit too high on the trucks. very noticably so. So if you are a stickler for getting close to scale height, many will require a change to trucks or the bolster.

The beautiful MTH PRR R50b reefer is a case in point. It sits way too high when you just change the wheels. I thinbk about a scale foot. On the other hand, if you change the height, you usually end up having to work on the ends to mount a scale coupler.

on MTH cars with a metal deck, you can cut out the dimples that make up the car body bolsters with a chassis punch, then add the bolsters of your liking, such as a plastic PSC. This brings the car very close to correct height with proper 2 rail trucks.

Another trick I have used on these cars is to just disassmble and turn the metal floor over and reinstall it with the bolster dimples inside. Then of course I still need to build a bolster. Even the underbody details reattach this way.

I had forgot about this until you mentioned cutting the dimples out.
