I just bought a 5 car set of the weaver NYC Aluminum plated
pass cars that are 3 rail. I also went and bought 5 pairs of the weaver 2 rail pass car trucks from weaver to convert these to 2 rail. but I see its not going to be so easy. the bolster plate does not sit the 2 rail trucks center to the underside body frame.does weaver sell a bolster plate for the 2 rail trucks. or do i have to modify the bolster plates myself..I bought these cars because Golden Gate is taking forever with the Empire state cars. |

Have you contacted Weaver? I have contemplated buying individual Weaver cars in 3-R with the same intent but discovered they were similiar extrusions to the old "high floor" Lionel style as once sold by Clark Benson, specifically what is the actual bolster variance relative to the car center, side and height you describe?

Well this may sound crazy but I'll tell you what i did. I First took the wheel sets off the the weaver 2 rail trucks. the axles are the same pointed type as the three rail ones.I put them on the three rail trucks, they went on very easy with little side to side play, I added two Gray insulated fiber washer. 1/4"OD x 1/8" ID x .010" thick, on each insulated side of the wheel set against the truck frame. also i removed the lionel style coupler nuckle from that long shaft that is part of the three rail truck style, cut off two sides and left the top section to fit the kadee coupler that i tapped with 1/72 machine screws.the coupler height was perfect for O scale, so no spacers were needed. then to save the interior lighting, I took the bolster from the two rail trucks, made two notches with a cut off wheel and they fitted right over the three rail bolster.I solder them in place. You have to remove the black paint from the spots you want the solder to hold. like with copper plumbing installation.I wish I know how to upload pictures on this site. I would love to show you how it all looks. I cant beleive it went so well. and works great. I guess because I started with weaver cars and used weaver trucks. for one car it took about 2 hours of work. the only left over parts was the two rail truck side frames. wheel sets alone from NWSL are like $14.00. for 4 sets and the weaver trucks were $16.00 a pair. so by going with weaver I was able to use the wheels and the bolster's with the allready installed copper swipes for the lighting.

Sounds great Anothny, we'd sure love to see some pix.
The easiest way to post pix is to create a photo album in that area of this Forum. There is a max size to your pix allowed, equal to 10" x 8" at 72 ppi. Once you've created the album, you can click on each pix and 'detach' it. Then copy the URL from the detached pix and paste it into your post here using the insert image function. Chris |

Hey Tony, is that a swinging coupler? Don't hold your breath but I spoke to GGD, they said Sept for the nickel plated cars to match the ESE. Its slated to be done in Aug and on the water.

Mike,
I was at the club and saw what a mess the engine facility has become. "Talk about jumping in ones grave" Those diesels in the roundhouse look so out of place its not funny. The Turntable can not take heavy engines.I'm shocked it still works. The pile up of steam on the approach tracks is for the birds.sorry i missed out on the fun and games.but its time to get things back in order. I understand work is being done on the track on the upper level, so that may explain the pile up.but still we can't use the yard as a dumping ground.also that MTH 2 stall engine house is very out of scale. that should be given to some kid for a Christmas layout. |
