Have I missed an announcement of any kind? I haven't seen any of Ed's offerings on this board in quite a while. Sent him some jokes but the e-mails were returned with no such address.

Hi Bill,

Ed is doing fine but he did change his e mail server. He does check in here every now and then. I know he's working on another locomotive project to occupy his time. Big Grin

Oh he's alive and well. We still communicate from time to time. Good guy and very helpful when it comes to modeling.

He's currently working on an SCL BQ23-7 model. Here is a photo of his current work:

Ed and I converse on a regular basis and he's fine. As always, he's a wealth of good modeling tips... and a great sense of humor.

Speaking of Ed. He just posted a response he got back from MRC (Model Rectifier Corp) on the Atlas Forum when he asked where their decoders were made. They responded "China".

So, Ed took them to task and asked why they didn't emmigrate to China and enjoy the lower cost of living and informed them he only buys American. Big Grin

You gotta love Ed. He says it just like he lives it and is a no BS man, besides being a very talented modeler. He has had several articles in "O Scale Trains" in recent months.

I wonder how long that thread will last before either being locked or disappear since Atlas products are made in China too. Red Face

I was wondering what happened, good to hear he is okay.

Yes to all! Ed keeps in touch regularly and is doing quite well, modeling and building as usual (...that BQ23-7).

I admire him, he is a much better man than I. Unlike me, he spends more time at the workbench and the layout rather than at the computer! Smile

Ok I'll bite. What whale belly article in OST? I see nothing in the last several issues? I am looking to do the PRR whale belly tank car using the atlas O 33K whale belly car and some 6 wheeled trucks.

The next issue coming out will have it. It's not on the news stands yet.

Just received the new copy of OST with Ed's fine tank car article. He did a great job with it.

Here's a before and after comparison from Ed, if you haven't seen the article:

That was such a fun build!

I had been talking to Ed about it and while I was still thinking he was hacking away on the Weaver car. Once he showed me how he did it I started cutting on mine and it was fairly easy getting the tank to the whale belly shape. Getting and adding the details took a little more effort, but I'm glad I did it. I had some pictures of mine finished but lost them when my computer died back in March so I need to take more.

I submitted an similar article to the SCL Modeler, but I'm not sure if it will make it in the next issue. They said it would so I guess I'll just wait and see.

OK I'll bite... Where did Ed R get the GE hood and radiator section? Are the pieces stripped down cut down lionel U36b or a williams u33c? I hope Ed knows he can order the Weaver u25b Fuel tank to get the extra weight! Wink

Sorry to cause the furor Ed. Galloping senility has set in in Bedford NH.I am getting stuff ready to sell at the O National and among it are some of your offerings over the years. All nice items that deserved wider circulation.
1. The British Columbia Rwy bulkhead flat
2. The 86 trailer train flat
3. A Weaver 50 foot box car with the waffle side overlay you made.

Ed certainly has a lot of talent and know-how in the train world. It's a pity he does not reply with some of his expert knowledge..... Wink

Probably he's too busy with his cat's and gardening... Oops

Just read a thread started by Ed on the Atlas Forum and he mentions that he was a Shop Teacher at one time. That explains his eagerness to teach us and his ability to reach us in the process. Great modeler and a fine gentleman.

Better yet, he bought an MTH C30-7 for the long hood and radiator section. He of course made the cab and will cast copies in urethane. As for the fuel tank, he needs it to be hollow for his old time Weaver style drive, which he makes himself.

Greetings,
Is Ed in the 0 scale hall of fame yet? He seems suited for it.

Just a quick note from Ed -> Thanks for your kind and generous words here.

And, BTW, Ed's a great teacher from the "how to do it" and DIY schools...

I wholeheartedly agree.

Ed has never let a lack of a model stop him. Some of his projects include:

  • A CF7. I'd love to see him release that as a kit.
  • Small urethane locomotives, including an articulated.
  • GE Ingersoll-Rand Box Cab at least two years before MTH did one. Was available briefly as a kit. Maybe he'll re-release this one.
  • 40-foot, "flat packed" plug-door box car kits.
  • Numerous truck side-frames cast in urethane.
  • 89-foot trailer flat cars at least 4 years before Atlas produced them.

Ed was also responsible for the small steam locomotives from Adirondack Car and Foundry and if I recall correctly, was connected with those done by HB Engineering as well.

Christopher,

Sorry, but I TOTALLY DISAGREE! If Ed can make that tank car pictured into a whale belly, he should be in the MAGICIAN'S Hall of Fame! Smile
