For those who just received your invoices for the B&O Q-4 mikados did you happen to notice the line on the form marked " B&O T-3 mountain reservation"?

Expect to see both tender versions - the welded "square" tank and the long vanderbilt as used on the T-3t.

The Warbaby T3s will be a nice addition to the roster. Some of us have been asking for one for a long time now.

When did the Q4 invoices come out? I haven't seen mine yet.

i think the B&O T4d mountain looks better than the T3. yah but u'll say
it's not an original B&O! well, besides looks, she had more tractive force
for pulling more cars. u can check it out in the model RR's cyclopedia and
B&O pwr by staufer. the original engines were owned by B&M and L&HR
(boston & main, leighigh & hudson river). sunset came out with it like
3 yrs ago? didn't have the chance to own it.

can anyone post a photo of the T4d MODEL here other than the sunset's ad?
broad shots and closeups of details would be nice, especially of valve gears
(rods, eccentric rods, walchaerts, etc).

Hi Carman and Bob,
To clarify, the B&O purchased 13 ex B&M 4-8-2 mountains (class R1 and R2) in 1947. These engines were built by Baldwin in the late 1930s. The B&O used class T-4 (10 engines) and T-4a (3 engines). There was no class T-4d. The only difference in classes was the heating surface in the firebox and boiler. It is arguably one of the best looking locomotives the B&O had.

I puchased the Sunset T-4 in the spring of 2005. The engine weighted 5 lbs 12 oz. I added weight to make it 6 lbs 8 oz. The wheels still slip at a full stall, but it can really haul the freight. It is almost as good as my Sunset EM1 2-8-8-4.

The class T-3b mountains that Sunset/GGD is bringing in is a completely different locomotive. The B&O's Mt Clare Shops in Baltimore rebuilt old pacifics and mikes to make home-grown 4-8-2 mountains. With a larger squared off rectangular tender then the T-4 and a smaller dia. boiler (78" vs. 86" on the T-4) some will say the perspective and looks of the T-3 was not quite right. Some will say the long (50' 8") Vanderbilt tender did not help matters much. Seven engines were equipped with the long tender.

Anyway, Sunset/GGD has the erection drawings from the B&ORRHS Archives so it will be very correct!
