Does anyone have prototype photo's of flat cars with large wooden crates or 1 very large wooden crate attached to them? If so can you post them? Need one for a flat car project. Thanks, Mike

If you want to see one on a video, go on the Prelinger archive and download or watch the New Haven promo video "A Great Railroad at Work". There's a good flat car shot with a Pratt and Whitney labeled crate that is talked about on the video.

Well, after looking through 6 xerox boxes of RMC's/MRG/MM/RMJ mags as well as OSN, all of the TKM issues and probably a few grand worth of freight car and RR books, I found a big ONE picture of a flat car with a crate load, in the December 1988 Model Railroading.

It's an NYC 70 ton 53'6" AAR flat with 4 large wooden crates on it. Car # 499372, photo taken in 1953.

I KNOW i've seen more flat car pix, I just can't find them now.

I'll scan this one in for you, please email me (addy in profile) where to send it to...

I'm uploading that picture from the December 98 Model Railroading as well as an article from the June 1995 RMC about "modeling freight car loads" for you as we speak!

The prelinger archives are great. I have that video on DVD which is a bit better quality. Nevertheless it is a good site; the vintage Third Avenue El video is a true classic.

Here's a MUST SEE page for steam era RR stuff, "the high def photo blog" of Shorpy. Some are the Jack Delano Library of Congress photos, but there are tons and tons of classic era photos. Excellent archivals stuff.

PS many train photos aren't in the railroad and train section.

Mike, if you want a few more pictures, I forgot that there is an excellent article in the April 2006 RMC that shows clearly flat cars loaded at the Bucyrus Erie plant with all of the details of the loading rules.

Please let me know, I can scan them in and send to you if you wish...
