I have recently aquired a new Yoder 44 tonner. I'm told it is going to be happy with a relatively small decoder (1 amp). I want to ask what any of you may have done DCC wise with this small diesel. Does anyone offer the correct sound for example or will I have to settle for something generic. My personal recollection of New Haven 44's were of a fairly low key sound range and of course a first generation horn. Since I don't have a large fleet of motive power I do want the few I do have to be as close to their prototype sound as possible. If there was perhaps a more productive place for me to post this question let me know please.

Generally HO guys know more about DCC and sound in small locos than O guys so you might look for a good HO site? |

Bob:
I think you're probably going to need more than 1 amp. Perhaps one of these links will help: DCC links: http://www.ncedcc.com/ (NCE) http://www.zimo.at/web2007/index2E.htm (ZIMO) http://www.lenz.com/ (LENZ) http://www.soundtraxx.com/ (SOUNDTRAXX) http://www.loksound.com/ (LOKSOUND) http://www.digitrax.com/ (DIGITRAX) http://www.qsindustries.com/ (QUANTUM) I can't help with sound for the 44-tonner, but the folks at one of these links would most likely have the answers. I have the Yoder 70 ton and it runs fine on an "HO" decoder.
No sound, however. Dick |

I did TMCC control and sound in the three rail version of the 44 tonner. I used Electric Railroad components. A tight fit and a small speaker similar to the speakers used in the Atlas SW series.
Pictures are contain in this file. GE 44 tonner |

flanger,
if u look into pg 6 of 48/ft 0-scale news, march 2008 issue, find Dallee Electronic's sound brd for DC and DCC used for the GE 44 tonner being mentioned. pls let us know how yours would turn out. i don't know how u can manage the ckt brd into it let alone speaker(s). if it's 2 motored, then u may need to convert it to a single motor for more room? |

Carman and any others who may be following this thread...take a look at this website and see what seems to be a state of the art installation of DCC and sound in the Rich Yoder 44 tonner. They have mistakenly called Yoders engine a On30 but regardless they seem to have a really classy installation from what I can see.

The TCS T1 decoder is an HO decoder. As I have a switching layout (2 rail) that is what I use except doe a PD F unit and an old Weaver RS3.
I have an Atlas SW8, GP9 and a GP15. Dick |

Rich Yoder did bring in some of the 45 tonners in an On30 version and I think that's the conversion listed on the above mentioned website. It looks like there are siderods on the trucks, which are only on the 45 tonner.

rich yoder made GE 45 tonner in 5ft ga and 4ft 8.5 inch gauge
(Proto:48) as well, not just narrow ga. check out my article and photos of the model in this forum. it runs and looks very nice. |

flanger,
I have 2 44T's and one is a Yoder, the other an Acme. The Yoder has what I call my standard DCC setup with separate decoders for motor and sound. I use NCE's 408 and a Soundtraxx DSX together. The 408 is probably overkill for the engine, but for me it is as I said, standard. Both of the decoders were placed underneath between the battery box sides under the cab. The DSX was mounted under the cab floor first and then the 408 placed over it, both mounted with two sided foam adhesive. To make the 408 decoder fit which is mounted crossways, I removed both harness plugs and soldered wires directly to the tops of the now exposed pins. The speaker is in one of the hoods. This operation works very nicely. The down side is the sound itself. I know there has been discussion before about getting the correct Caterpilar two motor sound but from what I have seen that will be difficult due to the board size. I compromised by using Soundtaxx's Fairbanks Morse decoder. It was the best choice I could make at the time. It is the only FM decoder I have and it sounds different enough from the usual GM, GE, and Alco. My operators like it and no visitor has questioned it. I simply believed that if and when Soundtraxx came out with the correct sound I would swap it out, but they seem to have lost interest in the DSX series. Anyway, I'm happy with my compromise and wanted you to know that it is possible to mount a good sized decoder pair outside rather than inside. I would normally attach a photo as I do with other groups, but I find this one too difficult to work with. Good luck with your quest, Ben Brown |
