I have a twin-motored, Overland, NP Z8 Challenger, that I would like to add sound to. The only sound system that I currently have is a Sierra system in a Sunset SF 2-10-4. That sounds good, but has its limitations - especially the inability to blow the whistle independent of the fixed "grade-crossing" pattern.
I run exclusively at the Twin City Model Railroad Museum. The Museum has block systems with walk-around throttles. It does, however, have one loop that can be isolated so you can run (I think) DCC or other style systems.
One of the members has an Atlas SD-40 with a Proto 2000 sound system. That system works very nicely. It has great sound, and offers the flexibility that I want for the whistle. Here are my requirements:
- Must offer a choice of whistle & chuff sounds.
- I'm guessing that I will need two systems, as I want the two engines to go in-and-of of sync - just like the real thing. By the way, I have heard the sound system in the MTH NP Challenger. This is s very nice sounding system, but doesn't appear to offer the flexibility that I desire. The chuff goes in-and-of of sync, but it's "artificial"; i.e.: not in sync with the drivers. I want both engines to chuff independently.
- It should be noted that this engine typically only draws about 1/2 AMP when starting or pulling a 20 car train.
Recommendations, please.
