Title says it all. My contact info is in my profile. These do NOT need to be mint in the box, just nice runner grade or better.

Thanks.

mdainsd,

I have a complete set of these 21" UP K-Line passenger cars including the blunt-end observation car and they are absolutely terrific, extremely rare, and extremely hard find!

It took me over 5 years to collect them so I hope it takes you considerably less time to find a set.

Happy hunting!

Thanks! Your post about these up in the 3 rail got me thinking that I'd rather have these for my Challenger than the 18" Lionel's (still fine cars in their own right).

mdainsd,

I must warn you these particular K-Line passenger cars can be very expensive to acquire from either a collector or dealer. My experience is auctions are no better either.

You might still want to consider purchasing the 18" Lionel passenger cars which most likely will cost you less money and less hassle to find. They're very nice cars and will cost you approximately half what the K-Line ones go for today.

So, what would you estimate I may be looking at? This is going to be my one premier train, so I'm willing to do what it takes (I think Roll Eyes )

mdainsd,

You may get UP "City of Los Angeles" 21" passenger cars faster from Golden Gate Depot. They have just announced 4 car sets of "Pullman Smoothe Side" four different railroads, "set A in early 2010" and "set B coming later 2010".

www.goldengatedepot.com or phone (925) 820-7701

They make truely SPECTACULAR scale passenger cars in O 3-Rail and 2-Rail.

mdainsd,

Hot Waters suggestion is a good one to consider!

Golden Gate Depot makes an excellent product and might very well be worth your consideration and wait.

The K-Line passenger cars will cost you at least $175 to $225 each and the extremely rare blunt-end observation car $400 and up.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks to you Jeff I finally got the blunt-end observation car to complete my K-Line UP City of Los Angeles consist.

As a side note, I had no idea that you also have a 10 car set of these passenger cars in your collection. If I should decide to double the size of my UP consist I now know who to ask.

Just kidding!

I located a diner on a internet auction site. since it was the first I found I guess its the easiest to find. Im not trying for that one though as the seller has less than 100% positive feedback.

I also have a call in to GGD...

Evan, thanks for the note here- glad you are enjoying the obs car- a very sweet car by all means. I have the 10-car set, with 5 domes, 3 coaches, a diner and the flat end obs car. I use my custom painted MTH E-8 ABA set, or my customized MTH 844, which I removed the white stripes along the sides, painted the driver axles black (not silver metal as they delivered them) and painted the front wheel centers, trailing wheel centers, and all tender wheel centers silver. I also have a DD40AX that can be used. It makes for a spectacular train when running-

I am looking at adding one of the 60' UP express cars that I am going to modify and repaint to go with this set- as close as i can resemble the one they use now-

Thank you for the link. What an absolute shame K-line ended up where it is today, relegated to one page in the Lionel catalog. Wish I had been paying better attention to them in years past.

mdainsd,

The K-Line Legacy site is an excellent source for reviewing previous K-Line items, including their beautiful passenger car sets.

And yes, it's a real shame their still not around importing them today!

To my way of thinking Lionel should just drop their K-Line brand and forget about it.

I agree. Wonder if they hang on to it like that to keep it from falling into the enemy's hands?

Some of the K-Line 21" UP cars seem very difficult to locate now (while others seem easier to find). It took me quite a while to track down the RPO + Lounge 2-pack at a reasonable price. I wonder how many of these sets K-Line made?

mdainsd,

If you have the chance to pick up the K-Line UP set at a reasonable price, then I would recommend them to you. They are very nice cars. The only thing that I would suggest is trying to buy them all together since some of the cars seem difficult to track down and it usually ends up more expensive doing it piecemeal.

OK folks, we are nearing the halfway point in getting this set together.

I now have:

4690C 3-pac set
4690-49002 blunt end dome observation (yes! Big Grin )

Still looking for:

4690D RPO/Diner 2-pac
4690H Pullman/Lounge? 2-pac

And I still must be missing a number for a pair of cars as what I have above only equals 8??

mdainsd,

My 10 car set I thought was full (see above post) consists of:

4 - 21" cars including the Flat End Obs the 4 cars are the 47006 Dome Coach, 49002 Flat End Observation, 40001 Sun Cape and the 48001 Dome Diner. (Came in a set of 3, then i got the Flat End seperate)

2 car 15" set of Mail and Baggage,(Rare)

4 Car set of

1- K4690-31575 # 1575 “Sun Valley” OBSERVATION CAR 18''

1-K4690-38003 UP DOME DINER # 8003 18”

1- K4690-37000 UP DOME COACH # 700018''

Total 10. UNTIL I found the above ebay auction. Happy hunting. THe only downside of these cars are the people tend to get unglued easily. (As do I!)

1- K4690-31305 UP “Ocean Sunset” PULLMAN 18'' #1305

So what I am reading is that the full consist is not all 21" cars? I understood the baggage and mail were not.

As I mentioned I have now acquired the 3 pac of 21" cars that you listed and I already have located and secured the flat end dome observation, so maybe I am done trying to find 21" cars?

I guess I need to study further Smile

Hi Never mind the above ebay auction. According to the legacy site, that later 18" are shortened cars issued for smaller curves.

And yes the full consist of SCALE cars consisted of 15" mail and bags (base on the real 60' cars), 4 - prototypically correct to scale 18" (based on the real 72 ft cars) and the 4 21" cars you already have.

Now what we both are missing are the 4690-D set. That is 2 more 21" cars issued in '02. http://www.legacykline.com/app...rs&p_oem_sku=K-4690D

Heres the 4690 B scale set on ebay now: http://cgi.ebay.com/UNION-PACI...af2d40#ht_614wt_1167

Interesting how they don't call any of the sets by the name "City of L.A." after the 4690-D set. They are just called UP cars.

Is that you bidding on the ebay listing I posted?
I hope you win at a good price. THe four car set with the flat end went for $676 today. Yowza.

I am looking for the D set as I assume you might, but lets not bump into one another on ebay if you know what I mean, you can go first, but let me know if you aren't gonna go on them. My email will be on my profile.

Was this you?

I wanted to alert you as I have been following this thread. In doing so I may have alerted others, plus I considered seeking these out myself as I have the 21" B&O's. They are very nice and I am beginning to wonder about the collect-ability of these as the pricing is all over the place. Do you have the 4 and 2 pac sets yet?

We have 8 different K-Line 21" UP cars:

the 3-pac, the dome observation (K4690-49002), and two different 2-pacs

The 21" "pacs" are:
K4690C (Dome Coach, Dome Diner, Pullman) [3-pac]
K4690D (RPO, Lounge) [2-pac]
K4690H (Coach, Pullman) [2-pac]

We have the K-Line 18" Baggage and 18" Postal Storage Car (from the 18" K-Line pacs) to run on the head end. We also have an extra K-Line 21" Dome Coach to make it a real "Domeliner" set. It makes for a nice long 11 car consist plus the K-Line UP E-8 ABA set we use up front!

Jtrain, question: I bought all my 10 scale cars before I "hiatus'd" from the Hobby back in '02. After that they made the 4690D+H 2pac 21" sets. First in 2002 for the D, then 2005 for the H.

Now, the D set is titled "City of LA", but if the legacy site is correct; the H is not called that. Naming aside, is the H set an exact match in color and design to the rest of the UP 'City of' cars?

In your post you say "we have", are you a seller and are selling those sets? (I am new to this forum). If so I am interested in your prices for the D and H.

Best,

Ernie

Ernie,

We do not have any extra cars for sale right now. ("We" includes my wife and me!) I was just trying to help you guys as to what was made by K-Line based on what we purchased. I hope that you can find those cars that you are looking to buy.

The color on the various K-Line UP cars (all of the 21" and 18" cars that we have) is an exact match to my eyes.

I have not made any modifications to our E-8 ABA set. I just run it in conventional. I would think that you could add the electronics without much difficulty, if you wanted to do that.
