not like ebay, with a numbers rating. but just a section where people post a quick, short thread like "Mr. Whoever A+ seller!" or for a buyer that sends quick payment. it would be a nice way to see who are honest people to deal with. although my experience on the buy/sell board here has been great, i'm sure that some people might not have faired so well.

also, on other boards that i frequent, there is a minimum post/time requirement before you can post a for sale ad. this keeps out the dishonest kooks that just register to sell and possibly rip someone off.

just food for thought.

Greg, it's just not going to happen. Right at the top of the Buy Sell forum are these words:
quote:
OGR Publishing... will not get involved in mediating any disputes that may arise between buyers and sellers using this Buy/Sell/Wanted forum.

We offer the Buy/Sell forum as a free service for people to advertise a few items they want to sell. We do not have the staff to get involved in arbitrating disputes. If a rating system was instituted there, every time someone got a less than perfect rating they would complain and we would end up getting involved in mediating that dispute. We simply do not have the staff to do that.

Our core business is to publish a magazine. This forum - all sections of it - are provided to you as a free on-line place on the web to talk about trains.

Thanks Rich and Staff for supporting this great Forum. Its a great place to share ideas and information we all posess. I've learned and sharred a great deal of information on this forum and will continue to do so! As for a feedback remarks section, absolutily not. Must be for folks that are either in business, sell a lot of stuff or just want to upset someones apple cart. Go to E-Bay and post all the FEEDBACK you desire. The buy/sell section of this forum works well as long as people are honest about their transactions. I've noticed that some of the people that frequent the buy/sell board do a significant amount of business and at the same time have had no negative postings with reguards to their screen names. I've had nothing but a positive experience on this forum with the members and the things that I've bartered for. Thanks and Happy RailRoading!

well, what happens when someone isn't honest?

like you, all of my transactions on this forum have been great. and i do post all the feedback i desire on ebay, but you are missing the point. i prefer to buy here than on ebay.

my point is this-what is wrong with having a sub forum for giving kudos to those that are great people to deal with?

and rich, you posted-
OGR Publishing... will not get involved in mediating any disputes that may arise between buyers and sellers using this Buy/Sell/Wanted forum.

that's fine, but you can't have it both ways. meaning you let people buy and sell on your forum, not getting involved in disputes. but, you won't allow us to have a simple feedback system(people are automatically relating feedback to ebay these days.) and, there is no restriction on people that can sell on this forum-no post count requirement, no time requirement, nothing. so what happens when someone gets ripped off? if OGR publishing will not get involved, does that mean you will not delete that user's account? does that mean if i post 'don't buy from so and so!', will that post be deleted? get my point?

maybe nobody has been ripped of yet, and i hope no one does.

so, no feedback. cool. but there should be some type of requirement to sell on this board, post count, etc. someone that just registers should not be able to sell.

Think of the Buy/Sell forum as nothing more than an electronic bulletin board posted in a high-traffic area. That's it.

We don't make a dime on the buy/sell forum. We don't collect fees from anyone who buys or sells there. And most importantly, we do not have the staff to get into mediating disputes that will inevitably arise if a feedback system were instituted here. We recently got a hard-copy letter in the mail about an alleged dishonest seller, complete with a paper trail of Emails that supposedly showed the evidence. If continued pressure is exerted on OGR to begin mediating disputes, we'll just shut the Buy/Sell Forum down and be done with it.

If you think someone is dishonest, then don't buy from or sell to him. That's how you solve this.

BUT how do you know if the person on the other side is honest or dishonest?
I think your forum is great my son's use it a lot but when dealing with a complete stranger you go by the honor system 99.9% of your members are great and honest.
it is those few that make it hard for the many and almost all our our buy's from this forum went great no problem's at all.but the truth is that there are some who will take advantage of this forum or others and then that is when things get grazy and out of hand and then you can't even do anything about it.

THANK YOU

Ray, you will never know if buyers/sellers are honest or dishonest unless you have had some experience dealing with them. Rather than putting the burden on the Forum moderators, consider reviewing other posts by the buyer/seller. If you get the impression that person is dedicated to the hobby and to helping others, that impression probably will be worth a lot more than a 100% Ebay rating.

my main point is that anybody can register on this site and offer items for sale. if not a 'feedback' section, than at least a post count requirement/time requirement before you are allowed to sell here.

the few deals i have had through this board have been nothing less than great. a simple time/post requirement could help keep it that way.

If I might offer a suggestion. Before you consider buying from someone, do a search to look at some of that person's posts. Even if he is not a regular poster, there will always be folks commenting on items they purchased from that person. And, if there is something to complain about, you can bet it will be there, too.

Rich, if you receive numerous complaints regarding a particular buyer/seller does OGR reserve the right to suspend or cancel their posting privilages?

I think I understand OGR's staffing and financial limitations with respect to mediating. However, currently there is no method, aside from private e-mail reference checks, to make a determination if a buy/sell poster has integrity. Some my argue that a high post count number provides no solid information other than they like to hit the "Post Now" button Wink. I like the idea/practice of the buyers/sellers posting follow-up thank you's, questions, or comments to their original buy/sell thread. Those threads do not last long (60 days?) through the normal buy/sell deletion cycle, but with follow-up comments they provide the OGR community some information with regards to the parties involved. I hope that the Buy/Sell board will be retained.

I like the idea of having a set amount of posts elsewhere contributing on the forum before being able to post on the buy/sell....

would give some time for some credibility i suppose
