then why not just delete the whole thread?

http://ogaugerr.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/57660482/m/6361052174

and can the 'gasoline' threads get removed please? each one that starts as being disguised as 3 rail related quickly turns into wreck.

Brilliant Greg. Apparently Rich liked your idea as he deleted my thread on the Mac. While not directly trains, I use it almost solely for use in my hobby of trains. Photography of real trains, my models, train website, this site etc. There was train related stuff all through it. If they really didn't like it, they could have just locked it, and I still could have accessed some of the great info I received there. Now that info is lost forever. I have been a strong supporter of this forum over the years, but on occasion it seems they get real heavy on the delete key. That's the biggest reason I can't get any kind of a decent group staying in the subway section. Too heavy handed here, everyone says. Frown Some things overlap, and some leniency and common sense should prevail. There was nothing inflammatory there. Just helpful info for those of using a tool to further our enjoyment of our hobby.

I really enjoy this forum, and am thankful that OGR spends the resources to maintain it.

The one thing, however, that drives me crazy, is when treads are deleted. I would much rather see threads get locked and any offending post(s) get deleted while the thread remains.

I agree with jd-train. One of the best things about this forum is the varying viewpoints and advice of it's members, a lot of them professionals in their field. Much of the time it IS train related of some sort, be it in pursuit of model trains, whether it be costs of gas to the LHS, train shows, what is the most efficient automobile, a great price on ebay, or increased shipping costs from our LHS. These are trying times, OGRR. We need all the communication we can get from our members to save the most money we can. Thank you for providing this forum.

yeah, this forum is great. and i have learned a ton from my short time being involved in this hobby, met some great folks from this forum as well.

99%of all forum boards like this have SEVERAL moderators. usually two for each section, chosen by the 'webmaster' for being fair and knowledgeable in the section they moderate. get where i am going with this?

i guess my criticism is that there is no rhyme or reason as to what gets deleted and what doesn't. example-although they may start out as gas threads related to 'driving to york' or 'driving to my LHS' or 'are gas prices keeping you from buying trains' quickly turn into left wing vs. right wing rants. yet they are not deleted. mike, there is a huge difference in trying to help each other save money compared to the ridiculous gasoline threads on this board. while chris' thread about the new mac he bought(which he uses for his hobby and was positive)ARE deleted.

and what truly train related posts have been deleted and or locked? my guess is none. because threads that get locked/deleted are threads that the powers to be deem offensive. not train related. so, we are not missing any valuable information that has been deleted.

again, this forum is incredible. but it's the only game in town, and they know it.

JD and mike, the specific thread i am referring to is the one linked in the first post of this thread. any educational value lost if that gets deleted? then why bother with even locking it? just delete it.

Everything is welcome on forums,

UNTIL one of the coveted ingognito/undercover "Content" Nazis presses their beloved REPORT THIS POST NOW button and call down the powers that be for a ruling.

WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE YOU UNDERCOVER CONTENT NAZIS' YOU! <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Big Grin

I will chime in though as my opionion is just that and everyone has "one of those". Exposing children to the bickering of lawsuits and ills of business on this forum is and was and always will be beyond me but hey, not my house and he whom owns the house can rule the roost "."

I enjoy this forum so I'm not gonna female dog about it.

PS, I hate Macs...those guys write Windows virus's to 'try" to get at Bill THE KING Gates. (Bill runs Lionel I heard!!!)

this is one of the best threads in weeks Smile. you guys up there in the executive suite need to get your act together. Greg, Chris, Jim and artisan are right on.
I have also noticed a drop in new threads, could it be there are pissed off members just not bothering to post anymore? I've seen great restaurants go under because the owners although great cooks have no business sense.

I have been on the forum for six years and I have not noticed a drop in new threads. I am quite certain that is a mistaken impression, perhaps seasonal.

In my early days on the forum I was quite convinced that I knew how it should be run. I thought it was quite parochial the Rich insisted on being the only "moderator" of the forum and that he did not delegate that to some trusted lay members. I have since seen the wisdom of his decision because I frankly think that we need protection from ourselves here. Wink

Well said. Pretty soon the forum would be filled with everything and anything.

The fact that I use my computer to buy from Ebay, or store photos, does not make my computer train related. Nor do I think that if someone paid more than I think he should have for a train, train related. Who cares, some people have money, some don't.

that may or may not be true. but the fact is when you have one person calling all the shots, things can get messy.

You guys need to take a reality break.

First, by owning OGR, Rich owns this forum. He can make the rules any way he sees fit.

Second, thanks to him, his staff, and their work with the sponsers, this site always has been, and remains free (albeit only to us--they foot the bill).

Third, I have not always agreed with some of the decisions made but rules are rules.

If you don't like them, leave.

Now quit crying and let's get back to talkin' trains.

---Greg

i believe the expression is 'reality check'. but in either case, please, get us back to reality. glad to hear that you are an authority on who is living in a fantasy world.

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Greg Houser:First, by owning OGR, Rich owns this forum. He can make the rules any way he sees fit.[QUOTE]

i understand now. rich does what he wants, love it or leave it. does rich actually 'own' this forum, solely or otherwise? does he own OGR magazine? if rich does own this forum, then the name should be changed to 'rich's forum'. but greg, we both know that rich does not 'own' this forum. OGR and it's sponsors own this forum.

and by the way, we are not talking about the rules of this forum in this thread. we are talking about the no rhyme or reason of thread deletion.

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Greg Houser:Second, thanks to him, his staff, and their work with the sponsers, this site always has been, and remains free (albeit only to us--they foot the bill).[QUOTE]

i would have zero problem paying to use this forum. would you?

i am a member of other forums where i pay a yearly fee. that fee allows me to post in classified sections of other hobbies i participate in. it also keeps the forum going without outside sponsors, so that opinions may be expressed without worry of sponsors being offended.

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Greg Houser:Third, I have not always agreed with some of the decisions made but rules are rules.[QUOTE]

again, we are not talking about the rules on OGR. we are talking about the decisions. decisions are different than rules.

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Greg Houser:If you don't like them, leave.[QUOTE]

great! classic line. mostly used by folks that don't even want to consider a different idea or suggestion.

draconian

1876 (earlier Draconic, 1680), from Draco, Gk. statesman who laid down a code of laws for Athens 621 B.C.E. that mandated death as punishment for minor crimes. His name seems to mean lit. "sharp-sighted" (see dragon).

Here's the thing. Several other forums were started on O Gauge about the time this one was. For some reason, this one has grown and many others have failed or not grown.
I think the quality of the job that's done of the moderation of this forum, although some don't agree with it, even me once in a great while,(nobody's perfect
which includes me and Rich) is in large part responsible for that.

I have seen a few forums which have a place for off-topic subjects. I'm not saying we need one here but it might have been a great place for the computer discussion
mentioned above.
