look in the users profile. There is supposed to be a valid
email address there.

Good luck with that one. A large % of the forum do not list an email address. This is another good reason to be able to post a PM (Personal Message). Frown

Only if the member has chosen to make it public.

A good suggestion.

Is it real? Do you see it, too? We all see it. That don't make it real.

I don't understand the reason for not posting ones email. This Forum is supposed to be a group of friends who share a common interest, model O gauge trains. It angers me when someone wants an item and states the requestee look in the requestors profile for his email. Makes NO sense to me! Roll Eyes

If you post your email in a post, spam bots that crawl the internet can harvest it and add you to all sorts of lists. Keeping it in the profile and referring people there cuts down on the spam you get as bots can't crawl your profile.

All the more reason to have the ability to PM (Private Message) someone on the forum. Most forums provide that service. As an individual one can elect to either receive PMs or not. Wink Seems like it would be well received here. Wink

I took mine off my profile because I received some vulgar,hostile emails from a few members who did not like some opinion I posted. One even impersonated another person. It is only required to have a valid email for joining,it need not be public. It is a shame because most members here are great people.

Dale points out another good, yet unfortunate reason for keeping one's e-mail private...

Dale;

I understand your reasoning but by doing that, didn't they get the best of you? Wouldn't you be better served by blocking any future e-mails from these individuals?

Chuck

I am not an internet genius,but I guess anyone can claim to be anybody. I had 2 posters pretend to be someone else and send me a very vile Email from a second source Email provider. I was not smart enough to figure out the source and simply deleted the Email. I provide my Email in posts if people want to get a hold of me. I simply voiced an opinion on a celebrities that had trains post, Herman Goering came up and I said he was a celebrity and a few nuts came out of the woodwork. I did not say I liked him I just said he was a celebrity. I do not participate here on the Forum to confront people personally.

I think a few people are just full of anger and have to release it some way.

Another thing is some vendors can gather an Email list from the Forum and solicit business. If I want to be on some ones mailing list or newsletter,like MTH or Miller engineering, I simply sign up.

Any way it is not about letting people win it is about avoiding unpleasantness,there is enough of that in the world,I play with trains to escape all that. As far as blocking people can have multiple IDs and use various hosting Email sites.

Dale, I don't know who was vulgar but I am surprised because you usually help everyone. Thanks for the help and keep posting, Joe
