RJ must be on vacation??? Anyway, let's keep the tradition going. Let's see photos of some of your favorite tinplate electric locomotives. Here's one of mine...a French Hornby 0 gauge gem from the mid 1950s:

...and here is a great 0 gauge Maerklin prewar electric:

A nice electric. I believe this is from 1923 as it has the large gear.

Hi Folks,

I guess its time that I learn how to post photos to the forums. These are some pictures of my favorite electric outline locomotive - the American Flyer 3020. This is a first attempt and I am using some photos that I have already taken. Please be patient.

And here is second photo of the 3020 heading up the Columbia passenger cars.

I hope this works.

Greg, I got your 3020 and raise you a 4687!

This and the 4637 Shasta and the 4689 Pres Special are tied for first among my favorites.... well for WG at least.

Nice photos, everyone.

Robert...tell me more about that fabulous KTM electric.

Here's an early IVES 3243R...unplated. This one is from a 1924 set. You can't see it in the photo, but there is a rubber stamped "R" after 3243. It was the first year the IVES electric barrel reverse unit was used. The 3243 series is considered to be closer to prototype than other tinplate models of the time.

Alright then Rob,

I'm not a betting man but I will see your 4687, and raise you a 4039 (President's Special), a 4878 (Hamiltonian) and a 4644, we'll ignore that errant steamer in there for the time being. Smile

I have a difficult time picking my favorite of any Flyer engine, but I have to admit that your 4687 is dear to my heart and still on my "wanted" list.

Augh,

Greg you got me.... for now Smile

I haven't acquired the 4039 set yet (yet mind you!), my 4878 is apart for detailing, and the rest are packed away for the moment... Frown

Cool stuff... Even the errant Ives casting Golden State Loco!

A month behind, but what the heck. My son's favorite is the double motored Lionel 256...

My favorite is the first electric I purchased and restored, a Lionel 253...

Just saw your question, Jim. When I found it several years ago at a street fair, the pantographs were missing and I didn't know what it was. I found out later from Clem Clement, who has perhaps the largest KTM collection in the U.S., that it was made in Japan during the 1960's. It's a model of a Japanese electric locomotive. It is three-rail O-scale and has scale wheels, but runs great on Lionel tubular track. I found the KTM pantographs later on eBay, and used Lionel GG-1 insulators to mount them.

rlplionel: I thought you [ and perhaps other forumites ] might like to know the following about your KTM electric: It really isn't a model of a Japanese loco per se -- but I think that adds to the charm of the piece.
The Japanese EF58 loco was a 2-C-C-2 / 4-6-6-4, just like a GG1. KTM took the body style of the later production ones, considerably shortened it, and mounted it on trucks that they already produced to put under models of older B-B boxcabs. Since JNR electric class letters were "E" for Electric + a letter corresponding to the number of powered axles [ B = 2, F = 6, etc ], KTM called this model an ED58 rather than an EF58. It's also possible to find 2 axle models, usually in blue, that are identified as EB58's ! The green color scheme, incidently, was limited to a few EF58's used with the matching trainset on one of the premier Tokyo - Osaka runs in pre-Kodama MU days.

Enjoy it !

Best regards, SZ [ who has a few pieces of KTM but doesn't collect it ]

Thanks for the KTM info, SZ. I know what you mean about them shortening the electric. I originally thought mine was a trolley. I've seen some parts for a blue two axle model auctioned on eBay once. I would be interested in obtaining more KTM, but it's hard to come by.

Geez, Jim I was so busy looking at the Flyer stuff, I glossed over the 3243. Very nice indeed.

There is something about that Ives stuff! I don't have much, but it is intriguing... I am plowed over but those O gauge sets like the "Red Hawk", "Patriot", "Commodore Vanderbilt", "Black Diamond Jr", etc with the 140 series cars and either a motor unit, or the awesome 1122.... the Litho LVE sets are, well, pretty darn cool too.

M & P had a pretty nice Wide Ga set at York! With Flyer bodies....
