In restoring my 252 engine I took apart the manual reversing unit to clean it making a mark on the outside of the two circles so I could reconnect them properly. Well, I cleaned the mark off and now uncertain about how to position them. One circle has four screws on the outside and four dome shaped contact points connected to springs. The other circle has two brass semi circle contact areas. That is what concerns my question. Do I position the contact areas horizontally (top and bottom)or vertically (side to side) when I put the unit back together? I assume this makes a difference.
Basically, a specific allignment of the semicircular contacts with the button contacts is not important. Re-assemble the switch and place it on the frame or motor, being sure that the swing of the lever coincides with the slot in the body shell.
Attach the wire from the field coil to any post, then attach the wire from the pick-up to the opposite post. Attach the wires from the brushes to the other two posts. Sequence would be pick-up, brush, field coil, brush - which post you start with in relation to the inner circular contacts is not an issue.
If, when power is applied to the track, the direction of travel is opposite to the direction the reverse lever is pointing, reverse the two brush wires.
Just make sure the springs go back in place under each contact or you may go nuts trying to figure out why it is so touchy when trying to make it run. Hugh
