Those would be the U-G-L-Y and bulbous #380 electric and the #385 steam. The aesthetics of these two engines do not appeal to me: they are both too short and stubby looking. The #10 actually is better proportioned than the 380!

If anyone would like to see a photo of a 385E you can reference The Celebrate Tinplate-Steam thread from last month. Last post my 385E.

The next time I publically display trains I will do a survey. One day line up half a dozen electrics and see which ones are the most appealling. Polling people with no knowledge of trains. It will be interesting to see how the icons of the toy train world hold up without bias. Next day I will do Steam maybe a little passenger or freight.

Wonder how a 200 or 500 series car will hold up campared to an Ives or Flyer freight car.

Will Rogers once said "He never met a man he didn't like.". I'd have to say that goes for any standard gauge as well. To each his own Art.

Acid:

EXCELLENT restoration!! Smile

NICE work! Smile

Admittedly, my personal negative feelings about both the #385 (#1835) and the #380 are based on personal aesthetic perceptions. They are most certainly CLASSIC locos, but they just do not appeal to me! Smile

Well Art, this thread certainly proves that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I think the 385E/1835E is beautifully proportioned. Here once again are photos of my 1835E restoration from acid's earlier thread.

From what I've seen, that might not be too far off from standard gauge at times, either.

Looks like it is time to repost my 385E instead of just a reference from another thread.

I have always liked the 385/1835.

The 380 had to grow on me (an aquired taste?).

I have both (and I like their looks).

There will always be a subjective element when it comes down to preferences. Smile
