Hello my friends
I have a quick question.
I have aquired a Lionel #83 traffic signal. It is going to have to be re painted. Problem is the red celluloid is gone. What would be something good to replace it with. Can you still get celluloid, if so where?.
Also I found an old thread about the #83 by NJCJOE. There was a comment from a Chuck Sartor who said he had the lettering for the #83. Does anyone know if this is a rubber stamp? And if so where I might find one.
Many thanks in advance
Cody

Cody,

This is a picture of my No. 83 that I restored, prior to installing the dry transfers from Chuck.

The dry transfers work very well as long as you take your time. In the past I've used a red film called "ruby" that my dad got from his work years ago to make new lenses. It is a clear film with a thin red film attached. They used to scrape the red film off to make artwork images. If you email me your address I could probably dig up enough for you to redo the four lenses in the No. 83.

The red lenses are available from better parts vendors like George Tbolt (#83 red lens $.50 Under Pre-War Accessories). Just order these lenses and you'll be set. Dry transfers are available for that accessory.

One good source for celluloid or a similar type material is a theatre group. If there is a Little Theatre near you or anywhere there might be a stage production. The material they "gel" or color the stage lights with was back in my day celluloid, or may still be that or a compatible material. They usually have some scrap.
