I have read many good things over the years about Olsen's.

I have had great luck with Jeff at the Train Tender for reproduction Lionel parts. Jeff is very helpful and usually has what I need at a good price with speedy reasonably priced shipping.

George Tebolt Train Parts is a great source. I have never run into stocking issues with George, unlike some of the others.

Have used all three listed above with good results.

George Tebolt has bee excellent to deal with.
MTH has very high quality parts as well (their stacked gears for later Super Motors and Build-A-Loco Motors are superb. For wheels, look to Bowser (if still available) or MTH. I have tried other brands but the dimensions are not correct (the diameter is slightly smaller and the flanges are too deep on the other brands). Are there any books on basic how to for trains? Such as pulling wheels, what to do with the motors etc? I'm all for diving in but that plan is sometimes an expensive education. I would prefer to learn by reading first.

Greenberg's "Lionel Prewar Trains Repair and Operating Manual" is a good resource. Probably out of print, but they do turn up on auction sites, out of print dealers.
