Just got off the phone with Justrains. My Brute is in and is shipping!!!!

I was warned that the box weighs 53 pounds (got to love that free Justrains shipping!) and that the loco itself weighs in at 50 pounds even!! Brute may be an understatement.

Art, I dont think you will be able to handle this monster so I thought Id offer you 50 cents on the dollars to save you the pain. What do you say? Big Grin

Make sure you give us a full rundown when received.

I didn't order one and opted for the President's train and cars.

Enjoy!

It's like the birth of a new child coming home! Ok, maybe not that much but still an event for the memories.

Is it conventional or traditonal?

I'm sure Art has it covered. If not he can call me!

Hmm...if the Brute tips the scales at 50 pounds and the packaging only weighs three pounds, I sure hope it's well-designed packaging. Wink

I have mine and I finally got it running on the track. This thing is shipped in a metal cage. There enough metal in the packing to make another engine.
The biggest issue I am having is not the width but the height. I have shelves hanging over the layout. The Brute is about 9 1/2 to 10 inches tall. I have spent a good portion of the evening moving shelves because I had a lot of clearance issues. Plan on spending a minimum of 20 minutes just getting the brute out of it cage.

Scott, I dont know you from Adam, but from reading this forum it seems that you from time to time have issues getting a new purchase in the door? If so, just how did you manage this one? Its not like you said "hey honey, look over there" and snuck it in while she was distracted?

Scott:

THANK YOU for the great photos! Smile That protective metal frame is impressive looking! The folks at Nassau Hobby Center earlier today said they were shipping. My Brute will remain in its carton until I can transport it to Bear Creek. I am disappointed in the fact that it will apparently NOT negotiate the MTH lighted lockons. Frown Can someone positively confirm this? Confused

Paint finish looks great! Would like to see it next to one of your state cars.

Hiding a standard gauge engine is the equivalent of hiding a Volkswagen in your house--you just can't expect to get away with it very long. Hiding the Brute would be like hiding an 18 wheeler. She knew about the Brute. A few months ago she told me she had this dream of me sneaking in a huge box. The box said Lionel but it was beige and had an old time picture of a kid with his arms out stretched. In amazement I said WOW you were dreaming about the Brute. I took most of the grief then --she's still not happy at least I am not hiding it-like that would work.

That bridge is a 2 by 4 covered in landscape rock and tile grout. The rest of my viaducts are 1 by 4's. However I would recommend anyone that buys one of these make sure your check your bridges and overhead clearance --you need 10 inches overhead.

There are a couple of factory nicks. Sorry Art, I don't own any state cars. I never purchased a State Set---at this point why would I. New Brute cars should be in the February Lionel Corporation Tinplate Catalog.

Very impressive packaging, but I would be concerned about how well the MDF is going to hold up under typical mail order shipping. The stuff has a tendency to snap and repeated screwing eventually strips because it is so brittle.

The Brute really is a big bad monster! I could have never gotten it into the house without my wife and everyone else seeing it arrive. Never mind trying to carry it into the attic.

When seen next to the 400e one really gets a really good idea just how large the Brute actually is - and I thought the 400e was a 'large' engine.

I can only imagine how large the passenger cars are going to be. The engine and passenger car set combined will give a whole new meaning to the word 'tinplate'!

Factory nicks, you say? EEEK! I suppose just getting this thing into the box might cause a few nicks or scrapes, but still a $1500 engine - should be perfect! I hope my OCD will accept any deficiencies! Big Grin

I haven't yet heard about the matching cars for the Brute. I haven't bought one yet as I went on a big kick of huge really large outdoor live steam trains for a while. What cars are in the works for the Brute? Maybe extra large States cars? Or something else? Is this a "for sure thing" or a rumer or hopeful thinking? Has anyone seen the non-motorized version yet? I want that one, but for half the price. Since it's not much more in parts than a car instead of an engine.

Seeing that thing next to a 400E is stunning! Are there going to be cars that will match it's size? I believe I may sell off my MTH 381 and invest in that baby if cars are comming. I'll bet if I made a flat car with a seats on it I could pull my 2 grandkids around with it.

It's a big locomotive (for a Standard Gauge model), but I'm afraid it's not anywhere near big enough for that.

For those who want to see this beauty again.........

Here is the desciption from the TCA site, "This amazing locomotive is a standard-gauge Liberty Lines 600E 2-6-4 locomotive, almost 36 inches long! Perhaps 100 were made, by TCA member Harlan Creswell of Seattle, WA. It is an extended version of the Lionel 400E locomotive made in the 1930s. This locomotive rivals the one-of-a-kind Lionel Super-381E which is on display at the Williamsport, PA Historical Society Museum."
