Hello! I'm looking for a picture of a pre-war layout, #174, as described in the TCA hardcover, Lionel Trains Standard of the World 1900-1943 on page 206. I'm not sure if this was a dealer display, or if these were sold to the public through the catalog. There is no image of the layout in the book just a short description and a date of production, 1924-1925. I would like to recreate this layout for my newly acquired 153 and passenger cars. If anyone has an image to post here or email, perhaps from the Greenberg pre-war catalog reproductions or another source, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! James This message has been edited. Last edited by: Samplingman, |

It's also pictured on page 12, 1928 catalog. 1 3/8"! If the O gauge forum existed then, it would probably be an interesting topic. Gary |

I agree that the library is often overlooked as a benefit. Great example of how it can help.

I agree! Let's see more images of these classic "Scenic Railways"! Anyone have a re-creation that they would like to show off? |

I never knew it was so easy to get info from them, let alone an image. I think it is a major "selling" point to potential members, but most just talk about York as the major attraction. I'm going to make a point of visiting the library when I go to the Museum in a few weeks. James |

I was thinking about just suspening a double loop from the ceiling rafters for my two prewar sets.
However, after seeing some of these images, I'm thinking about a bridge, and another bridge, and a couple of villas. I'd love to see more images of the classic prewar layouts! Jim Route of Linganore Lines - where we still run them the 'old school' way! |

Here are a few... Set 407 from the 1928 catalog. The one the kids on the pocket catalog cover are playing at. ============= The 1931 version of the same outfit. ============= From the preface of the 1932 catalog. Don't think this one is documented anywhere. Outfit 405E from 1932. I wonder what these set boxes looked like! Gary |

I'll gladly pay twice the listed catalog price for ALL of these layouts!

Here are a couple similar ideas that your 153 would love to travel around. The first is a 173 scenic layout sold at auction a couple of years ago. I'd replace the nonwhistling station with a whistling one. The second is a wonderful tinplate setup made by Toy Trains Unlimited. The only thing I'd consider in this one is the size of the 124 station against your smaller 153 engine. You may wish to put a smaller station there (like a 127 station), but that's just me.
You can also see the Toy Trains Unlimited layout in action on YouTube at the following link: Tinplate YouTube __________________________________ Take care.....RJ (TCA 07-61869) |

Thanks to everyone for the images of this Pre-War outfit. After nearly 6 months I have found some, but not all of the pieces. I'm still missing two #62 semaphores and a decent 121 station. The most difficult parts to find have been the vintage 022 manual non-illuminated switches and pre-war track in decent shape. Crazy, I know, but I was attempting to re-create a layout that may have existed in the 1924-1929 Pre-Crash era. I have even located wood trim from a turn of the century building that I may include. In addition, the 174 called for #68 warning sign and #60 telegraph poles, I've only been able to locate 068 and 060's which are a bit shorter. I couldn't pass up a set of 060's at York, they are easily C-8 with an original box and the track supports. And yes, there are some Marx pieces filling in a bit. Sorry, but I still can't take a decent photo in this dark basement!
Overall view: A 153 electric easing up to...a water tower?? Sorry, I love the 93! 068: A nice set of 060's: One more for the road: James |

Very good thread. Thanks for posting those great layouts. There is something about this, from an historical perspective, that is just right. Layouts are one of my favorite parts of the hobby.
Very best, Mike Spanier Lionel Super "O" Track is always being BOUGHT & SOLD |

Simply stunning. Looks like it came right out of the catalog. Great job and congrats.

What a great thread. I love re-creations of the Lionel display layouts. I am in the process of starting one from the 1925 catalog which geatures an oval of O-gauge above an oval of standard gauge. It should be pretty cool.

Harm - Any chance you have a picture of that 1925 layout? I would like to check it out before I start mine.
I was thinking about something similar but haven't been able to find any original pics of a combo elevated o gauge + standard gauge layout. |
