I would appreciate it if someone could post some history and information about the Lionel 820 Freight Car (a box car looking thing) The one I have is Orange in color with the old Illinois Central Logo on it and the number 820 stamped on the end. It has the hook type couplers and two trucks with two sets of wheels each on them.

Particularly other colors and logos they might have been manufactured with.

I have several pictures in my books but they have not history and they all are the one I already have. Much thanks in advance.

820 came as follows from 1915-1926

Illinois Central and Union Pacific Markings
orange with orange top
orange with maroon top
orange with brown top
Yellow-orange with Brown top
Yellow-orange with yellow-orange top

The IC had changes in the markings at least 3 variations

ATSF Markings
Dark olive all over

this one is harder to find

Hope this helps

Just to add a little more history, your freight car is part of the first O-gauge freight car series Lionel ever offered. There were only 3 cars with 8 wheels, your 820 box car, a 821 cattle car, and the 822 caboose. So you really have the beginnings of Lionel's O-gauge history. Enjoy.

That is quite exciting. Now I need to look for a cattle car. This collection of pre war was in poor condition paint wise. It came with two of the 820 boxcars, and the 822 caboose. Then a 804 tank car which I knew did not go with the boxcars and caboose. And then a home made gondola which really in a odd sort of way I like the most. It has the same size type trucks the caboose and boxcar has. The engine is a 252. I have restored the engine which did not run at all, the caboose and tank car and presently working on one of the boxcars.

Here is a photo of the set as i bought it.

Also, here is the logo that came on the 820 box car ( Illinois Central) I made for a decal once I finish with the painting. If anyone else can use copy it off here or if you need it in a higher resolution email me at jms2222@hotmail.com.
