Another Marx type layout which features the Unique Rock Island AA diesels. If you like lithography these are IT! They are comparably sized with the Marx 21 AA Santa Fes:

This is Saltrol's layout. He asked me to post it for him. He also supplied a bit about his interest in Marx and I quote:

"Marx is fun; I got my first Marx train in 1936, a clockwork M10000. In 1940, I received my first electric, a freight set with an 898 engine. I still have both and they still both run; the M10000, however, does have a replacement motor.
Rolland"

Steamer - I thought this was made by an acquaintance in Minnesota. Turns out it wasn't. Can not tell you much other then it came from eBay and the motors are not Marx. Wish I could tell you more.

Hey, I'm in the process of rebuilding my layout and starting to plan an upper level loop that I can run my Marx stuff on as well as some of the other quirky things in my collection that won't go over prewar switches and crossovers on the lower level.

Got a few questions for you guys;

1. I love those trestles. I really want part of my upper level to be somewhat see-through as it moves to the foreground. How tall are they?

2. where do you find them? ebay? and what's a fair price to pay?

great -inspirational stuff guys.

Answer: I don't have any handy but from what I can figure the #615 Marx Steel Trestle sets are 4" from the base to the top. The photo below is a Prewar item. A photo is below:

2. where do you find them? ebay? and what's a fair price to pay?

Answer: Yes, best place is eBay. Greenberg says in the $2.00 to $4.00 range each which I think is about right.

Norm,

Somehow that set looks just perfect on your layout.

Run that picture on the 3rd Rail page and watch some people freak thinking you've lost your mind!

Ironhorse, the original set box was pretty nicely printed up with a photo of this train sitting in an industrial setting. That very well could have been my original inspiration!

I wish I still had the original box and liner...

Norm,

Those are the trains I like! Marx trains = fun!

I call that particular set the "creamsickle set" becasue of the loco's colors.

I LOVE these posts and pics! So does my wife! True spirit
and beginnings of model railroading! Great "vintage" stuff!
Maybe the owners of this board can make this into a seperate
forum like other topics here!

Looks like there is enough support and people here interested!

I have some pics of the things my wife and I have that are
vintage Marx. Never could master the posting procedure here
for pictures. Always wondered why this site doesn't have the
direct uploading of pics like most other sites. Would be easier.

We run them under the tree at Christmas as well as on the
layouts in the basement. The grandchildren always enjoy them
because of their durability and "play"ability. Nice rugged stuff!

Wonderful layouts that take every bit as much time and detail
to construct and operate as any scale or high-rail layout!

Another reason for it being a great thread is because it is full of civility towards each other. The same fellowship as on the MarxYahooGroup. Gotta love it!

This might be the place to mention it: how about a web page devoted to the 3/16" scale that Marx used? (The scale was actually first used by American Flyer) It is basicly 1/64 - 3/16" scale trains running on O27 track. The scale encomapsses tinplate and plastic, as Marx made scale cars for both. What do you think?

For those who are not familiar with the 3/16" scale the below is what is considered 3/16" scale. The Pennsylvania Cattle cars in this condition are around $200 each:

Here is a link I did about Marx 3/16" scale:
